European Basketball Player of the Year Awards
The European Basketball Player of the Year Awards are the four awards given out on a yearly basis to the best male European basketball player of the year. More specifically, those are the Mr. Europa award, which began in 1976, the Euroscar, established in 1979, the All-Europeans Player of the Year, which started in 2005, and the FIBA Europe Player of the Year, which was inaugurated in 2005. All European basketball players, regardless of where they play in the world, or what league they play in, are eligible for the awards. The performances of European players with their pro club teams and/or with their national teams are taken into account. However, one does not take precedence over the other. For example, a player does not even have to play for his national team to win the awards.
The winner of the FIBA Europe award receives the prize after winning a vote by both fans and a panel of basketball experts, media members, and coaches from 25 different countries. Consequently, its legitimacy is considered higher than Superbasket magazine's Mister Europa Award and Gazzetta dello Sport's Euroscar Award, which do not include the fan vote. That being specified, the importance of those latter two awards rely on their tradition, as their inception occurred considerably prior to the FIBA Europe one. The FIBA Europe award is the only award of the four that is given out by the actual official governing body of European basketball, as the other awards are given out solely by media, and have no affiliation to any governing bodies of the sport. All in all, the laureates are the same on all four lists in the great majority of cases, with all of them representing some of the biggest European basketball stars since the mid-1970s. The All-Europeans Player of the Year award is voted on by the roughly 300 sports journalists that cover European basketball for Eurobasket.[1]
