European Journal of Taxonomy (EJT) is a peer-reviewed open access scientific journal for descriptive taxonomy of living and fossil eukaryotes, covering subjects in zoology (including entomology), botany (in its broadest sense), and palaeontology. EJT is supported by a consortium of European Natural History institutes[1] which fully fund the publication, but its scope is global. It is a diamond open access journal: both authors and readers can publish their results and access the content for free, without paying any fees or charges.[1] In the last ten years more than 3000 new taxa have been described in the journal.[2][3][4]
History
The European Journal of Taxonomy was initiated by a task force of people from the EDIT (European Distributed Institute of Taxonomy) network who worked together from June 2009 to September 2011 to propose a joint journal that would solve some of the issues identified in shifting from paper to e-only publishing for institutional journals in taxonomy. After their investigation, the task force presented a business model involving natural history institutions which offer their financial support and/or their in-kind support (skilled publishing staff, IT staff), providing autonomy for the journal. The first article was published on September 9th 2011. In October 2015, the Consortium of European Taxonomic Facilities (CETAF) and EJT consortium agreed on the official endorsement of the journal by the CETAF.[2][3]
Several journals have been merged into the European Journal of Taxonomy[5]:
- Journal of Afrotropical Zoology
- Bulletin de l'Institut Royal des Sciences Naturelles de Belgique - Entomologie
- Bulletin de l'Institut Royal des Sciences Naturelles de Belgique - Biologie
- Bulletin de l'Institut Royal des Sciences Naturelles de Belgique - Sciences de la Terre
- Steenstrupia
- Zoologische Mededelingen
