European Stroke Organisation (ESO)
The European Stroke Organisation (ESO) is a non-profit, pan-European medical society of stroke researchers and physicians, national and regional stroke societies and lay organisations that aims to reduce the burden of stroke. ESO was founded in December 2007, resulting from the merger of the European Stroke Council (ESC) and European Stroke Initiative(ESI). ESO is currently headquartered in Basel, Switzerland[1]. ESO is a member society of the World Stroke Organization (WSO).[2]
ESO is known for publishing Guidelines for the treatment of stroke[3], hosting the European Stroke Conference (ESOC)[4], and publishing the European Stroke Journal (ESJ)[5] as well as promoting stroke education. ESO supports Stroke Summer School[6], Stroke Winter School[7], European Master Programme in Stroke Medicine at Danube University, Krems, Austria.[8] ESO also supports ESO-EAST including the Registry of Stroke Care Quality (RES-Q)[9] and Angels[10].
Prof. Dr. Valeria Caso (Perugia, IT) is the current President of the ESO (2016-2018). Prof. Dr. Bart van der Worp (Utrecht, NL) is the President-Elect.
Mission and Action[edit]
The aim of the ESO is to reduce burden of stroke by changing the way that stroke is viewed and treated through professional and public education, and by making institutional changes.[11] ESO collaborates with European and international organisations including Stroke Alliance For Europe (SAFE)[12], World Stroke Organization (WSO)[13][14], World Health Organization (WHO), European Academy of Neurology (EAN)[15], Safe Implementation of Treatments in Stroke (SITS) [16], in order to achieve this mission.
Publications[edit]
European Stroke Journal (ESJ)[edit]
In 2016, the ESO founded the European Stroke Journal (ESJ), an independent, peer reviewed, medical journal published by SAGE[5]. The ESJ publishes articles in the fields of stroke research including, but not limited to, clinical stroke research, clinical trials, epidemiology, prevention, diagnosis, acute management, guidelines, rehabilitation, stroke care, and societal impact.
The Editor-in-Chief is Professor Bo Norrving (Lund University, SE) and Vice-Editor is Professor Didier Leys (University of Lille, FR).
THE VOICE OF STROKE in Europe[edit]
Since 2017, the ESO publishes a blog, "THE VOICE OF STROKE in Europe." The blog features content related to ESOC, comentary on ESJ articles, stroke trials, news from the European Parliament, ESO news and member submissions.
Guidelines[edit]
ESO publishes and maintains a free directory of Guidelines for the treatment of Stroke. The Guidelines are available for physicians and lay persons alike. Recently published guidelines include, "European Stroke Organisation guidelines for the management of post-stroke seizures and epilepsy"[17], "European Stroke Organization guideline for the diagnosis and treatment of cerebral venous thrombosis – Endorsed by the European Academy of Neurology [18]
Membership[edit]
As of February 2017, ESO represents over 5,000 members from 82 countries.[19] The ESO offers individual and organisational membership.
Individual Membership[edit]
The ESO offers Individual Membership for physicians interested in stroke. Membership is annual. All society leadership positions, including Executive Committee, Board of Directors and Committee Chair persons, are filled by ESO Individual members.
Organisational Membership[edit]
ESO offers organisational membership to national and regional organisations operating in the domain of stroke[20]. The individual members of organisational members are offered Associate membership status within ESO.
