Evan Roden
Evan Roden is a campaigner for legislative changes in organ donation laws in New York, advocating for mandatory organ-donation education, increased benefits for living organ donors, and implementing a presumed consent system. Roden founded the organization Youth Coalition for Organ Donation (YCOD) in 2017.[1]
Background[edit]
While in high school, Evan Roden contributed to drafting and advocating for legislation promoting a presumed consent system of organ donation, which was introduced in 2019 by Assembly member David DiPietro.[2] Roden has addressed potential concerns about informed consent in the organ-donation process.[3]
In 2017, Roden co-founded the Youth Coalition for Organ Donation (YCOD), which campaigned for an “opt-out” organ donation system in New York that would be similar to those in several European nations and Nova Scotia, Canada.[4][5] In 2019, YCOD presented an initial proposal, which did not become law. In 2022, YCOD, in partnership with Waitlist Zero, achieved legislative success with the Living Donor Support Law in New York State.[6]
Roden also campaigns using platforms to raise awareness about the importance of organ donation and encourages youth participation in political advocacy. His efforts have been locally and nationally recognized.[7][8] In 2021, Tulane University invited Roden to present at their TEDx program, speaking on youth political advocacy and his own experience with YCOD.[9]
Recognition[edit]
Roden received the Real Heroes Award from the American Red Cross in 2022,[10] in partnership with former Erie County Executive Joel Giambra, who had recently received a donor from a constituent in the community.[11]
In 2023, Loyola University of New Orleans invited Roden to join a team of students in submitting a redesign of the neighborhood New Orleans East and placed among winners. The Mayor of New Orleans invited Roden to present the group's design plan. [12]
Roden joined the Organ Donor Awareness Corporation's series of fireside chats in 2023.[13]
