Evergreen is a national not-for-profit based in Canada.[1] The organization is based out of the Don Valley Brick Works in Toronto, and offers a suite of programs locally in Toronto and nationally across Canada. The organization's demonstration site, Evergreen Brick Works, also at the Don Valley Brick Works, hosts a Saturday Farmers' Market and Sunday Artisan Market on weekends.[2] The location is reachable by car, shuttle bus, and connected through the City of Toronto trails system through the Don River Valley Trail.

The site has a mix of offerings to the public, including arts and exhibits[3], children's education programming and camps[4], as well as a social enterprise component with garden centre, cafe, well as bookable event space.[5] On a national level, the organization offers virtual programming for youth, as well as support services for Smart Cities and Housing through the Community Solutions Network.

History[edit]

Founded in 1991, the organization is a facilitator for organizations and individuals that work in the space of urban development and urban environmentalism.

In 2010, the charity officially opened Evergreen Brick Works as a public venue geared to teaching its visitors about sustainable city life. In that same year, it was named to National Geographic's Top 10 destinations for sustainable travel.[6] The Brick Works dates back to 1882 when red clay and shale were discovered in Toronto’s Don Valley. The business operated until the clay ran out in 1984.[7]

TD Future Cities Centre[edit]

Located at Evergreen Brick Works, the TD Future Cities Centre serves as an event space, a national hub for Future Cities Canada, as well as educational exhibits. The 53,000 square-foot building is an official heritage site in Ontario and its revitalization efforts aim to achieve a carbon neutral target.[8]
