Evi Fitriani (born 20 December 1968) is an Indonesian international relations scholar. She is a lecturer at the University of Indonesia and was the first female international relations professor in Indonesia upon her appointment on 13 November 2021. She had previously served as the head of the university's international relations department from 2012 until 2016.

Early life and education[edit]

Evi was born on 20 December 1968 in Muntok, a town on Bangka Island, as the second of third children of Muawanah and Amron Usman. Evi started her education at the Peltim elementary school and then the 1st Muntok Junior High School until the family moved to Pangkalpinang. She was only at the 1st Pangkalpinang Junior High School before the family moved to Jakarta.[1]

She completed her high school studies at the 51st Pondok Bambu Junior High School and then the 12th Klender High School in East Jakarta. She joined the school's students' union and become its deputy chairperson. She was also active in East Jakarta's flag hoisting troop organization.[1]

Evi attended the University of Indonesia (UI) in 1987, where she studied international relations.[1] Around that time, the ban on student political activities were lifted, and student councils in universities and faculties were reestablished.[2] Evi joined the Social and Political Sciences student council and become the head of the council's education section. She also joined the university's semi-military student regiment.[1]

Evi graduated from the university in 1993 with a doctorate in international relations. Upon her graduation, she received two different scholarships for further studies: the Chevening Scholarship for a master's degree at the University of Leeds and the Fulbright Program at the Ohio University. She took both and graduated from the University of Leeds and the Ohio University in 1994 and 1995, respectively.[3][4]

While she was an international relations lecturer in the university, Evi decided to pursue doctoral studies in international relations in the Crawford School of Economics and Government, Australian National University, with the support of an Australian Development Scholarship. Her doctoral advisors were Andrew MacIntyre and Jenny Corbett. She completed her doctoral studies in 2011.[3][5]

Academic career[edit]

Evi started teaching international relations at UI in 1996.[6] Evi was also involved in UI's administration, where she was involved in the establishment of UI's international office. She became the office's first head in 2003[7] and served in that position until 2005.[6] With the establishment of the office, the university began accepting international students, and Evi was tasked to lead the examination committee for international students.[8] She also held office as the secretary of the university's academic senate from 2011 until 2012[6] as well as a member of the university's task force on autonomy.[3]

From 2012 to 2016, Evi was the head of the international relations department in the University of Indonesia.[9] During her tenure, the ASEAN Study Center was established as a result of cooperation between the department, faculty, and Indonesia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.[10] Evi was involved in the 2014 Indonesian presidential election debates, where she became a member of an expert group responsible for steering the debate.[11] She also became a nominee for the moderator of the debate.[12]

In 2021, Evi became one of the candidate for the dean of UI's Faculty of Social and Political Sciences.[5] Evi stated her goal of making the faculty as a center for social studies in Southeast Asia and pledged to develop the faculty's educational, research, and service functions.[13] She, however, lost the selection process to Semiarto Aji Purwanto from the anthropology department.[14]

Appointment as professor[edit]

Evi was appointed as the professor of international relations in the University of Indonesia on 1 July 2021 through a decree by the Minister of Education and Culture.[6] She was inaugurated as professor of international relations on 16 November 2021.[15] She was UI's second full professor in international relations after Juwono Sudarsono in 1989[16] as well as Indonesia's first female international relations professor.[15]

In her inaugural speech, which was later published as a journal article, Evi emphasized the need for the development of a non-western perspective in international relations as well as an Indonesian school of thought. Evi proposed the establishment of the Depok School of International Relations, which she stated could be elaborated further through Juwono Sudarsono's idea of interconnection between the five geographical scopes: local, provincial, national, regional, and global. and three dimensions of issues: political-security, economy, and social-culture.[17]

Personal life[edit]

Evi was married to Djaya Sukarno, whom she met during her time in the student regiment. Djaya is currently a civil servant in the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing. The couple has two children.[1]
