History
Founded in 2006, the company has spent the majority of its time building a portfolio of transmedia projects and conducting research into procedural narrative.[1] That research has led to the development of the Toska Engine[2][3] which is being included in their upcoming first-party title video game Gyre: Maelstrom[4] for PC and console.
Interactive Narrative
Research in interactive narrative began back in the 1970s and has since received a great deal of attention, especially in the last decade. A number of game companies have explored various techniques in providing players new experiences in games ranging from pure fixed, scripted stories to some version of a branching narrative, or non-linear gameplay. Many games that are touted as procedural in nature usually approach the problem of providing gameplay that results in procedurally generated environments (such as Spelunky, Minecraft, No Man's Sky and many others), while others have attempted to provide new approaches to the story itself such as the award winning 80 Days with a massive branching storyline based on their Ink tool.[5] Most AAA games use some version of a branching story line model, such as Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Quantum Break and Deus Ex: Mankind Divided. The downside of a branching narrative in a large game world means that the number of production assets and labour that goes into it drives game budgets very high. Witcher 3 cost approximately $81M (USD)[6] and Deus Ex: Mankind Divided is estimated to cost $70M (CAD).[7] The Toska Engine claims to break from these standard implementations by providing a full dynamic story generated at run-time, complete with dialogue and character behaviours based on psychological models, and using only a fraction of the budget and team size.[8]
Since the first game that employs Toska is still in development many eagerly await the potential it could deliver in a new game experience.[9]
