Excel High School (Minnesota)
Excel High School is one of three schools in the Excel Education Systems Independent School System. It is an accredited private online school offering 6th through 12th grades both to traditional secondary students as well as adults. Their offices are located in Minnetonka, Minnesota, but as an online school, they provide accredited diploma programs for students around the globe. Excel operates as an alternative to traditional schools such as public or charter in-person academic settings. As a virtual school headquartered in Minnesota, they offer flexible high school credit and diploma options as an alternative to traditional in-person schools.[1]
History[edit]
In 2004, Excel High School was founded by both business professionals and educators who partnered together to "provide an exceptional online learning experience that exceeds the highest academic standards in a nurturing, flexible, and affordable environment."[2] Rod Clarkson is the founder, chairman, and CEO of Excel Education Systems, the parent company of Excel High School.[3]
In 2016, Excel Education Systems expanded and added Northgate Academy, a faith-based online high school, and Excel Middle School.[4] In 2019, they expanded to include a post-secondary online career college to their school system with Washington Technical Institute (formerly Washington Online Learning Institute).[4]
As of 2019, Excel High School has partnered with schools, colleges, employers, and community organizations. They are also nationally qualified as an Eligible Career Pathway Program (ECPP)[5][6] by meeting the requirements for Title IV. Additionally, they partner with states[7] and school districts[8] to provide online learning opportunities and standards-aligned curriculum.
In 2022, Excel High School began a partnership with Gale,[9] part of Cengage Group, to provide public libraries around the U.S. the opportunity to offer online high school diploma courses for their communities.[10][11][12][13][14][15][16][17] According to Gale, the program is 100 percent online and available tuition-free for students who want to earn an accredited high school diploma through their public library.[18][19]
Academics[edit]
Excel High School provides open enrollment for their students, allowing students to enroll at any time during the year. Their courses are asynchronous, meaning students can work at their own pace, beginning and finishing according to their personal schedule within their allotted program timeline.[20] They offer a variety of diploma tracks including both full-time and part-time options for standard, Honors, SAT prep, and adult programs.[7] They offer 12 different AP Courses.[21] Full time school aged student programs include one-on-one online tutoring and an academic support team.[7][21]
Excel holds an articulation agreement with the University of California for approved EHS a-g course programs.[22]
They are an approved online course provider with the Washington Department of Education.[7]
Excel offers courses approved through the American Council on Education's[23] College Credit Recommendation Service (ACE CREDIT).[24]
Student outcomes[edit]
Excel High School averages 4,200 students, and their student to teacher ratio is 28:1.[21]
Accreditation and recognition[edit]
Excel is a regionally accredited online middle and high school. They hold accreditation from Cognia (formerly AdvancED).[25] Their accreditation profile also includes approval through Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools (MSA).[26]
They are recognized by the Minnesota Department of Education,[27] the National Center for Education Statistics,[28] the US Department of Education,[28] and the Virginia Council for Private Education.[29]
The Better Business Bureau reports that Excel High School has an A+ rating,[30] and they hold a five-star rating at GreatSchools.[31] They have a 4.9 start rating on Trustpilot.[32]
In 2020, they were recognized by Inc. 5000 (No. 2755),[33] and in 2022, they were named among the top 25 online high schools by Value Colleges.[34]
Gale Presents: Excel High School, Gale Group's library partnership with Excel High School, was awarded a 2023 EdTech Award from EdTech Digest.[35] The same partnership between Gale and Excel received a platinum award from the 2023 Modern Library Awards, citing the "21.5 credit, self-paced online high school completion program that allows public libraries to offer accredited high school diplomas to adults who wish to prepare for entry into the workforce, further their careers, or attend college."[36]
Excel High School's homeschool curriculum has been recognized by several homeschool rankings for its value in test-prep and overall content.[37][38]
