Exemplar Education (educational software)[edit]

Exemplar Education is a British company that offers online supplementary mathematics and English education for school-aged students in the United Kingdom.

History[edit]

Exemplar Education[1] was founded in Crystal Palace, London on August 23, 1991. They provide home-learning to supplement and support school work in maths, English and literacy.

The business has evolved over time with technology, originally offering VHS box-sets, then DVD box-sets and now a fully-online offering, with a cloud-based, online learning system for mathematics, English & literacy.

The management team has experience from The Open University as well as the founder who still leads the company.

They have been operating since 1991 and over 400,000 children in the United Kingdom have registered on their programmes, which are fully aligned with the UK National Curriculum[2] and the Scottish Curriculum for Excellence.

In 2019 a stand-alone GCSE maths programme was introduced to assist students in the lead-up to their GCSE Exams.

Exemplar method of learning[edit]

During an initial meeting between the family and their specialist Course Advisor, the current ability level of each student is assessed. Students are then benchmarked as to where they should start the programme, based on that assessment, so that each students’ online Study Plan is tailored to the child and based on their specific level of proficiency at the time.

Students start their programme with an online Initial Course Assessment and the system then populates an automated personalised Study Plan around the content for which the assessment shows they need support and it includes a Freephone helpline with UK Qualified Teachers, supported by an online interactive whiteboard.

Lessons with tests are created and the student needs to achieve at least an 80% pass-mark for each lesson to progress – if they don’t achieve the 80% pass-mark, the programme regenerates new lessons and questions around the content they didn’t understand, until the student is able to achieve the 80% pass-mark. These are built from the set of over 2,000 video tutorials and more than 6 million questions, to ensure non-duplication of content.

Once all lessons in the Course have been completed with an 80% pass-mark, the system presents the student with an End-of-Course Assessment which they need to achieve a 100% pass-mark for, in order to progress to the next Course (or School Year) – if they don’t achieve the 100% pass-mark, the programme regenerates new questions around the content they didn’t understand until the student is able to achieve the 100% pass-mark required, ensuring full knowledge is attained at the end of each Course (or School Year).
