The Exeter University Conservative Association (EUCA) is a student Conservative association at the University of Exeter. Founded in 1955, it is currently the largest party political student society at the University, and the third largest university Conservative association in the country[1]. While the society is not directly affiliated with the Conservative Party, many Members campaign for the Party locally within Devon.
13 EUCA alumni have become elected Members of Parliament[2]. Amongst them is the former Chancellor of the Exchequer and Home Secretary, Sajid Javid[3].
History[edit]
EUCA was founded in 1955, the same year that the University of Exeter received royal charter. During its history, the membership levels of the society have fluctuated, however it has regularly maintained its status of being the largest party political society at the University.
During the 1990-91 academic year, Sajid Javid, Robert Halfon, Tim Montgomerie, and David Burrowes were all leading Members. According to Burrowes, such was the groups involvement in conservative student politics at Exeter, a section of the then Student Union building was renamed "Norman Tebbit Corner"[4].
It is documented that Javid, Halfon, Montgomerie, and other EUCA Members at the time watched the 1992 General Election together at Montgomerie's student house[5]. The election saw a surprise victory for the Conservative Party.
Burrowes would become the first to be elected as an MP in the 2005 General Election, whilst Javid and Halfon were both elected in 2010. Montgomerie would go on to found the website, ConservativeHome. When Javid was appointed as Home Secretary by Prime Minister, Theresa May, in 2018, he became the first EUCA Alumni to serve within one of the Great Offices of State.
