Exotec [ezotɛ:k] (previously Exotec Solutions) is a startup created in 2015, located in Croix in the Hauts-de-France. The French company designs and develops solutions combining robotics and software to optimize order preparation and logistics for grocery stores, manufacturing and e-commerce.

History[edit]

Exotec was founded in July 2015 by Renaud Heitz et Romain Moulin,.[1] two colleagues from BA Systèmes.[2] The two engineers respectively from MINES ParisTech and Supaéro started developing a fleet of robots using laser sensors to locate and move independently to automate order picking systems. The robots are designed to help warehouse staff pick items from shelves up to 12 meters high[3].

Exotec started developing robotics software powered by machine learning to supervise and orchestrate the actions of the robots. The same year, Exotec raised 340,000 euros from business angels[4] to finance the creations of new prototypes.

In December 2016, Exotec announced a second fundraising of 3.3 million euros[5] from two investment funds 360 Capital Partners, and Breega Capital.[6]

In 2017 Exotec moved from Paris to Lille and started manufacturing its first robots. In the second part of 2017, Cdiscount deployed in Bordeaux the first Skypod robotic devices designed by the company that can move horizontally and vertically to replenish orders in the warehouse.[7] · [8]

In June 2018, Exotec completed a new funding round of 15 million euros[9] with Iris Capital, 360 Capital Partners and Breega to industrialize the manufacturing.[10]

To expand its capacity, in December 2018 Exotec moved to the city of Croix[11] and installed it's R&D lab, new offices with two production lines.[12]

In September 2020, Exotec raised 77 million euros[13] · [14] to accelerate its international development, particularly in Japan and the United States.[15] · [16]

In February 2021, Exotec entered the French Next40 ranking.[17]

In January 2022, Exotec raised $335 million in funding[18], making it the 25th French startup to be valued at more than $1 billion.[19] · [20] · [21]

In February 2022, Exotec was ranked in the 8th place by the Financial Times 1000 — Europe’s Fastest Growing Companies 2022[22] for its rapid, organic and sustainable growth. The French Magazine Les Echos named the robotic company as #1 in the 2022 Growth Champions ranking.[23]

International growth[edit]

In 2019, Exotec signed a strategic agreement with the North American logistics solutions integrator AHS[24], which works in particular with Walmart, eBay, and Sephora. The same year the company worked with Uniqlo to robotize one of its warehouses in the Netherlands.[25]

In 2020, the French company was selected by Uniqlo to robotize two more logistics warehouses in Japan.[25] · [26]

In 2021, the robotics company signed its first contract in the United States via the integrator AHS. The same year, Exotec also signed a contract with Decathlon in Canada. In order to support the growth of its activity, Exotec settles in Atlanta by opening offices in May 2021.[27]
