Express Zip Software is a file compression and archiving program published by NCH Software for Windows and Mac operating systems. It offers users the ability to open, manage, archive, extract and compress digital documents into .zip, .tar, .tgz, .wim, .arj, and .lzh as well as additional archive formats. Express Zip can also encrypt data, convert file formats, and back up files[2]. Express Zip allows users to burn archived files directly to optical media backups. [3] Currently, the most popular version of the program is 2.28, with well over half of all installations presently using this version. The majority of the program's users are located in the United States, but it is also common in parts of Europe as well. [4]

    Features[edit]

The Express Zip program window includes buttons to open an existing archive file, create a new archive, add files or folders to an archive, remove files from an archive, open a selected file, and convert an existing archive into another archive file type. Manage zip files by editing or moving contents. One of the program's primary uses is creating new file archives as well as opening existing file archives on your computer. Archives can be encrypted and password protected.[5] The program has the ability to convert archives to zip from other formats as well as split large zip files into smaller parts with multi-part split zip archives. Users may password protect zip files containing sensitive documents.

Express Zip supports opening and extracting zip, rar, cab, tar, 7z, iso, zipx, lzh, arj {additional formats}. Archives can be converted to .zip, .tar, tgz, wim, arj, lzh and {additional} file archive formats. Archived or compressed files can then be burned to CD.

    Interface[edit]

Express Zip has easy access features in the main toolbar for performing the basic operational functions of the program such as importing and deleting files and folders. Here the user will also find options for encryption and exporting, as well as an options button for modifying settings and standards.[6] The program also contains a help file that is stored on your computer but accessed through your browser. The help file contains explanations for the functions of the program as well as other useful information. [7] The program allows users to drag and drop files into the archive without problems. [8]

    Uses[edit]

Express Zip allows users to compress large data files for writing them to disc or e-mail, as well as decompress zipped download files and folders.[9] The software can also be used as a regular backup tool, by archiving the files you'd like to back up and then burning them to a DVD or CD disc with the built-in CD burning tool. Express Zip handles both compression and decompression of file archives and supports encrypted archives as well. [10]

    Size and compatibility[edit]

Express Zip is compatible with Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, 8.1 and Windows 10. At just under 1 MB, the download file size is relatively small and does not require much of the computer's resources. [11] The program is also compatible with Mac OS X versions 10.5 and above. [12] The program contains other important zip tool features such as its integration with the Explorer shell, wherein some of the programs options can appear in the right click menu of your cursor without ever having to open the application.[13] This utility compares well with others such as WinZip but has the advantage of being free.[14]

    Install[edit]

There are two versions of Express Zip, a free version and a premium version that you pay for. The free version is fully featured, but intended for non-commercial use only.[15] After installation, the program will install an optional handler in the windows task menu. This provides quick access to the program so that a user can simply right-click on a file and apply features of the program without having to actually launch it and import the files. The main program executable is expresszip.exe.[16]

    Supported formats[edit]

    Input[edit]

Express Zip supports files in the following file formats[17]: .zip, .jar, .nco, .rar, .cab, .gz, .tgz/tar.gz, .7z.ajr, .bz2, .lzh, .xz, .z, .iso, .img, .dmg, .wim, .zipx, .bkz, apk, .zab ; All work for both Windows and Micintosh except except.cab , .ajr , lzh. dmg ,.zipx apk ,.zab , which work only for Windows.

    Output[edit]

Files can be added to the following archive outputs: .zip, .7z, .tar, .tgz/tar.gz, .wim, .lzh, .arj -- all for both Windows and Mac

    Users[edit]

Express Zip is used for file archiving, unzipping and encryption by individuals as well as businesses. Educational institutions use and recommend Express Zip to students[18]

    Controversy[edit]

Previously, Express Zip and other NCH products came bundled with optional browser plugins like the Conduit[19] and Chrome toolbars. These toolbars sparked complaints from users and triggered malware warnings from AV software companies such as Norton and McAffee. NCH Software has since removed all toolbars, browsers, and 3rd party app offerings in all program versions released after July 2015.[20]
