Extermination of Nagadhatta

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

The Extermination of Nagadhatta occurred when the Indian Emperor Samudragupta was against Nagadhatta. Samudragupta's opponent Nagadhatta was probably the ruler of Pundravardhana region of North Bengal. During his conquests of Bengal, Samudragupta was against the king of North Bengal while he wanted his Empire to economically benefit from Bengal's regions by conquering them. It seems that he was violent towards Nagadhatta for such reasons and therefore exterminated him.

Background[edit]

After Samudragupta defeated the Nagas and Vakatakas, at some point in time he focused his attention on the Southern-Eastern part of the Ganga Basin.[1]

It was evident enough that the Indian Emperor Samudragupta wanted his Empire to benefit from the already flourishing regions of Bengal such as the famous port of Tamarilipti which was situated at the Deltaic region.[1]

The Extermination[edit]

While the contemporary rulers such as the Chinese, Kushans and Iranians were trying to control certain trade routes, undoubtedly Samudragupta had economic interests for his Empire when he violently exterminated Nagadhatta (according to Sircar he was probably the ruler of Pundravardhana region of North Bengal).[1]
