He is a professor of History of Science and Technology at the University of Insubria (Varese, Italy). Since 2020, he has served as President of the International Commission on the History of Geological Sciences (INHIGEO) under the IUGS.[1][2]
Biography
Vaccari was born in Verona in 1962.[3]
He graduated from the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Florence in 1989.
In 1996, he earned his PhD in History of Science from the University of Bari.
Between 1990 and 1998, he conducted research and held fellowships at several European institutions, including the University of Rostock and the Freiberg University of Mining and Technology (Germany); Trinity College Dublin (Ireland); the Geological Survey of Austria, Vienna; and the CNRS in Paris (France).[4]
Since 2002, he has taught at the University of Insubria, where he holds the position of Full Professor (Ordinario).
He is the director of the Research Centre for the History of Mining, Material Culture and Earth Sciences (Centro di Ricerca sulla Storia della Montagna, della Cultura Materiale e delle Scienze della Terra).
Scientific work
Vaccari's research focuses on the history of geology, mineralogy, and mining in early modern Europe. His specific interests include:
- The history of mountain classification in the 18th century;
- The scientific legacy of Giovanni Arduino (developer of the first stratigraphic scale);
- The dissemination of geological knowledge through scientific correspondence and travel during the Enlightenment;
- The history of science-technology interactions in the mining industry.
Membership
Since 2020, he has been President of the International Commission on the History of Geological Sciences (INHIGEO).
He is a member of numerous international scientific societies.[citation needed]
Awards and recognition
- 2020 — Mary C. Rabbitt History of Geology Award, presented by the Geological Society of America (GSA) for outstanding contributions to the study of the history of geology.[5]
Publications
Ezio Vaccari is the author of more than 130 scholarly works, including monographs and articles in international journals.[6] Selected publications:
