FIDEM Charity Foundation (FIDEM) is a non-profit organisation that facilitates life-changing access to education, well-being guidance, and support for vulnerable people particularly women, adolescent girls, and children in Malta and Gozo.

Miss Malta Universe 2020 Anthea Zammit and International DJ Paula Frost are FIDEM ambassadors.[1].

Mission and values[edit]

FIDEM aims to transform people’s future through the power of education and a positive focus on their well-being.

Harnessing the transformative power of education is the basis of the work of FIDEM at all levels, along with other values. Among them there are self-confidence and empathy, positive thinking and dynamic, personal responsibility, and community support.

History of origin[edit]

FIDEM was founded in 2018 by lawyer Sabine Agius Cabourdin in response to an increase in requests for legal assistance from vulnerable people who wanted to have access to education. Pro bono consultations were exposing other obstacles to education that went beyond the assistance offered by legal aid. These included a lack of school uniforms and supplies, books, computer equipment, and means of transportation to school.

The name of foundation comes from the Latin word 'fidem' and means “trust”, “faith”.

Projects and results[edit]

Hear to Help helpline[edit]

In March 2020 FIDEM set up the Hear to Help helpline to support the Maltese community and the island's inhabitants, particularly people who have well-being and legal aid concerns due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Through the Helpline's work, FIDEM detected one of the most frequent well-being concerns of their callers was loneliness, particularly amongst older people. That awareness formed the basis for a new project called We Connect.

We Connect[edit]

We Connect was launched in May 2020 as a platform for people in Malta and Gozo to meet online in a safe environment and share tips about wellbeing. We Connect offers different types of activities (pilates class, lecture about emotional health or nutrition sections, drawing lesson, online concert) to help uplift well-being for free [2]. FIDEM released the song "Flimkien - Together We Can" as a sign of support for the people working to keep Malta running during the tough COVID-19 pandemic times. The song was performed by Rachel Fabri and Edward Ellul [3].

Educate to Empower[edit]

FIDEM believes in the transformative power of education and since 2018 it has been helping women and adolescent girls gain access to training that would enable them to change their life. FIDEM started helping by purchasing laptops, school uniforms and other equipment for women and adolescent girls residing in domestic violence shelters and children’s homes. In September 2020 FIDEM officially launched the Educate to Empower Programme which funds educational courses and learning materials. FIDEM also offers psychological support to vulnerable women, adolescent girls, and children on an ongoing basis [4]. It helps them to focus on their education [5].

Funding[edit]

FIDEM is funded via corporate sponsorship and public donations. Foundation accepts assistance in any amount of money. Also people can join FIDEM's team as mentors [6]
