Fabio di Celmo (1 June 1965, Genoa – 4 September 1997, Havana) was an Italian entrepreneur, murdered in the 1997 explosion of a bomb planted by anti-Castro terrorists in a bar at the Hotel Copacabana in Havana, Cuba.[1][2]
At the age of 22, he completed his military service and, after traveling to several European and American countries, moved to Canada in 1993. With his father, he visited Cuba for the first time in 1993 to look at business opportunities for hotel supplies. He subsequently visited Cuba and Havana several times, frequently using the bar in the Copacabana Miramar area.
After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Cuba experienced a period of severe economic recession, known as the periodo especial.
In the latter half of the 1990s, Cuba's economy began to recover due to substantial investment in tourism. In this context, a series of bombings in 1997 targeted major tourist destinations. These attacks, carried out by some anti-Castro Cubans, aimed to destabilize the Cuban economy and gain popular support for overthrowing the government of Fidel Castro. On September 4, 1997, Salvadoran terrorist Raúl Cruz León planted a C-4 explosive device in the lobby of the Hotel Copacabana.
