Fabrique Records is an Austrian independent record label based in Vienna. The company primarily releases electronic, experimental and indie music and also operates as a music publisher and artist management firm.[1][2]

Founded in 2001 by label manager Michael Martinek and journalist Christian Rösner, Fabrique has been profiled by Austrian music media such as Radio FM4 and mica – music austria and is noted for a small but curated roster that includes artists like DRAMAS, Christopher Chaplin, Jana Irmert, Laikka, Boz Boorer, Violeta Vicci and Peter Zirbs.[3][4][5]

History

Foundation and early years

Fabrique Records was founded in late 2001 in Vienna by Michael Martinek and Christian Rösner as a platform for friends and like-minded artists, including Mauracher, Konsorten TM and producer Thomas Pötz (Kava).[6][7] In 2002 the in-house publishing arm Edition Fabrique was launched, followed in 2004 by the electronic sublabel Stereoalpine, which was later reintegrated into the main imprint.[8]

The label’s early catalogue combined down-tempo and electronic productions with indie and art-pop releases and quickly established connections with Austria’s alternative broadcaster FM4, where Fabrique acts such as Mauracher and TNT Jackson received regular airplay.

Gugging collaborations

From 2008 Fabrique Records developed a long-term collaboration with the Art Brut Museum / Galerie Gugging in Lower Austria. As part of the first Gugginger Irritationen music and art festival in 2008, Fabrique artists Kava (Thomas Pötz) and Hans-Joachim Roedelius created musical portraits of Gugging Art Brut artists such as Oswald Tschirtner and August Walla; the works were released on The Gugging Album and premiered at the festival.[9]

The festival Gugginger Irritationen itself was initiated by Martinek and Fabrique Records together with curator Nina Katschnig and the artist duo marshall!yeti, and returned in 2010 for a second edition at the Art Brut Center.[10][11] An English-language report by Austrian Music Export later highlighted the festival as an example of cross-disciplinary cooperation between experimental music and outsider art.[12]

Fabrique describes the relationship with Galerie Gugging as an ongoing “fruitful collaboration”, reflecting the label’s interest in visual art and Art Brut in particular.[13]

Anniversaries and label nights

In September 2012 Fabrique celebrated its (roughly) ten-year anniversary with a label night at the Vienna jazz club Porgy & Bess, featuring several acts from the roster and accompanied by press coverage in national media, including the daily Wiener Zeitung and an in-depth label portrait by mica – music austria.[14][15]

The label’s fifteenth anniversary was marked in May 2017 with a large-scale label event at the ORF RadioKulturhaus in Vienna, again featuring international guests and a selection of Fabrique artists. The show was previewed in outlets such as Vienna Online and in local press interviews with Martinek about the label’s philosophy and history.[16][17][18]

Notable releases and artists

Over the years Fabrique Records has released albums and EPs by both Austrian and international artists. The label’s catalogue includes work by electronics and sound-art producers, art-pop bands and contemporary classical or avant-garde musicians.[19][20]

Among the higher-profile international releases are solo albums by British guitarist and producer Boz Boorer, known for his long-standing work with Morrissey. Fabrique issued Boorer’s album Some of the Parts (2012) and the later LP Age of Boom (2016), which were promoted internationally through digital singles such as "El Camino Real".[21][22]

The label has also worked with British composer Christopher Chaplin, Berlin-based sound and media artist Jana Irmert, London-based composer Drum & Lace, the Vienna-based art-pop duo DRAMAS and the British-Swiss violinist Violeta Vicci.[23][24]

In the 2020s Fabrique continued to sign emerging artists. In 2023 Austrian singer-songwriter Lil Julez released his debut album it was a hoax through the label; the record was covered by Radio FM4 and selected as FM4 Soundpark “Act of the Month” by Austrian Music Export, both in German and English-language features.[25][26]

Audiobook projects

Beyond music releases, Fabrique Records has occasionally produced spoken-word and audiobook projects. In 2012 the label presented an audio book in collaboration with Austrian writer Peter Turrini, featuring texts by Art Brut artist August Walla.[27] A further audiobook with Austrian actor and musician Manuel Rubey followed in 2021.

In October 2025 Fabrique released the German-language audiobook of Alexander Hacke’s revised and expanded autobiography KRACH – Verzerrte Erinnerungen, narrated by Hacke himself and produced together with Fabrique artist Peter Zirbs.[28][29] The release has been distributed through several international audiobook platforms and covered by arts media and blogs, including a feature by Austrian news channel Puls 24 and English-language music writing.[30][31][32]
