Faculty of Material Technologies and Textile Design – one of the faculties of Lodz University of Technology. It was founded as the Textile Faculty in 1947. In 2001 it was re-named as the Faculty of Textile Engineering and Marketing.

Faculty history[edit]

The Textile Division was first founded as part of the Mechanical Faculty on the basis of an act adopted on 22 August 1945 by the Mechanical Faculty Board. Professor Władysław Bratkowski was appointed the head of the Textile Department. The Rector of Lodz University of Technology, Professor Bohdan Stefanowski supported the efforts made by the growing industry to establish a separate faculty and put forward another resolution, which was subsequently adopted by the Mechanical Faculty Board on 14 January 1947, transforming the existing Textile Division into the separate Textile Faculty.

In the first half of 1947 the following departments were founded within the newly created Faculty:

  • Department of Textile Engineering I, transferred from the Mechanical Faculty together with its head, Professor Władysław Bratkowski
  • Department of Textile Engineering II, headed by Engineer Paweł Prindisz
  • Department of Textile Industrial Machinery, transferred from the Mechanical Faculty together with its head, Engineer Mieczysław Klimek
  • Department of Textile Raw Materials, transferred from the Mechanical Faculty together with its head, Engineer Tadeusz Żyliński
  • In 1950 the Department of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics was founded and dr Jerzy Leyko was put in charge.

At the beginning of 1947 the Textile Faculty launched its activity still under the supervision of the Mechanical Faculty. Initially the Mechanical Faculty delegated Engineer Tadeusz Żyliński to perform the duties of the associate dean only to appoint him its dean at the beginning of 1948. The first meeting of the Textile Faculty Board took place on 7 September 1948, when a decision was made to put forward a motion to the Ministry of National Education to authorize the Textile Faculty to grant ‘habilitation’ qualification in the following fields: textile raw materials, fibre mechanical technology, fibre chemical technology and textile machinery construction.

The 1949/50 academic year saw the foundation of further units:

  • Department of Man-Made and Synthetic Fibre Technologies, headed by dr Anastazy Boryniec
  • Department of Yarn and Fabric Finishing, headed by Engineer Józef Meissner
  • Department of Textile Machinery Parts, headed by Engineer Julian Hunka
  • Department of Weaving Technology, headed by Engineer Józef Grosman
  • Division of Knitting Technology, headed by Engineer Leon Pfeifer

Some of the existing departments were re-named in 1957/58. The Department of Machinery Parts and Textile Machinery Construction was divided into two independent departments, whereas the Division of Knitting Technology was transformed into the Department of Knitting Technology. At the same time, the Department of Physical Chemistry of Polymers was founded and doc. dr Eligia Turska was put in charge. Another change was incorporating the Interfaculty of Industrial Economics as part of the Textile Faculty, initially headed by mgr W. Holtzman and subsequently run by doc. dr Jerzy Rachwalski until 1960.

The result of the reorganization were 13 departments along with their 17 internal divisions:

  • Department and Division of Technical Mechanics
  • Department and Division of Textile Machinery Parts
  • Department and Division of Textile Machinery Construction
  • Department of Textile Raw Materials and Metrology (including Division of Textile Raw Materials and Metrology and Division of Production Technology of Textile Raw Materials)
  • Department of Spinning Technology (including Division of Spinning Basics, Division of Cotton Spinning Technology and Division of Wool Spinning Technology)
  • Department of Fibres Spinning Technology (including Division of Fibres Spinning Technology and Division of Flax and Hemp Processing)
  • Department and Division of Weaving Technology
  • Department and Division of Knitting Technology
  • Department and Division of Yarn and Fabric Finishing
  • Department and Division of Man-Made Fibres Technology
  • Department and Division of Physical Chemistry and Polymers
  • Department and Division of Industrial Economics

In 1970 another organizational restructuring within Lodz University of Technology resulted in the creation of 6 institutes which replaced some of the departments and divisions existing to date.

  • Institute of Metrology, Non-Woven Fabrics and Clothing Industry
  • Institute of Mechanical Technology of Fibres
  • Institute of Man-made Fibres (in January 1994 it was divided into the Department of Physical Chemistry and Polymers and the Department of Man-Made Fibres Technology)
  • Institute of Fibre Physics and Chemical Processing of Fibres
  • Institute of Textile Machinery
  • Institute of Organization and Management (in 1991 it was separated and transformed into the Faculty of Organization and Management)
  • Textile Institute of Lodz University of Technology subsidiary in Bielsko-Biała (in 1992 it was transformed into an independent Faculty of Textile and Environmental Engineering)
