FPF Courtyard

The Fall Program for Freshmen (FPF) is a small, collaborative learning community for incoming Freshmen admitted to UC Berkeley's College of Letters and Science.[1] The program was established in 1983 and is operated through UC Berkeley Extension.[2]

FPF classes are held at the American Baptist Seminary of the West, a small campus located a few blocks south of the UC Berkeley campus.[2] The program features small class sizes and high-touch advising support.[3] FPF only operates for the first semester and students transition to the main UC Berkeley campus for the second semester onwards. Although it is only offered for the first semester, FPF is considered a First Year Experience (FYE) program. Like other FYE programs, participation in FPF is correlated with better student outcomes.[4] FPF students on average have higher 4-year and 6-year graduation rates than their non-FPF peers.[5]

The number of students in FPF fluctuates from year to year but has averaged between 600 and 700 since 2004. All of the courses and instructors in the program are approved by the UC Berkeley Academic Senate. Fall Program for Freshmen grades are computed as part of the UC Berkeley grade point average (GPA) and, along with coursework, are transferred to the UC Berkeley transcript. FPF courses satisfy UC Berkeley graduation requirements.[2]

In the past, FPF was a program for students who received Spring Admission to UC Berkeley. The university ended Spring Admission in 2015[6] and since then FPF has been open to all incoming Freshmen who are admitted to the College of Letters and Science.[1] There is no application for the program and students are admitted on a first-come, first-served basis.[7]
