Falsch is a Belgian drama by Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne, inspired by the play of the same name written by René Kalisky between 1979 and 1981, first directed by Antoine Vitez at the Theatre National de Chaillot after the author’s death in 1981. The first feature film by the Dardenne brothers, Falsch was produced in 1986, co-produced by Dérives (production house of the Dardenne brothers), RTBF Liège, Arcanal and Théâtre de la Place. The shooting solely took place at night, at the Ostend–Bruges International Airport, since it was normally open to air traffic across the day.

Synopsis[edit]

As night falls, a four-engine aircraft has just landed at a countryside airport. Only one passenger leaves the plane, Joe: the last survivor of the Jewish family ‘Falsch’. It has been 40 years since he left Berlin - in 1938. In the arrival hall, his deceased family is waiting: the parents, the sister, the brother, the sister-in-law, the aunt - who died in the concentration camps - , the uncle and his wife - exiled to England, gone to Palestine and returned to Berlin to die - and Lili the young German, the daughter of a Nazi, whom he loved and who died under the bombing of Berlin. A night of celebration but also face to face drama for these thirteen people who have all suffered. Where was, where stands the guilt? Is there any room for ‘survivors’ in history?

An Atypical Movie[edit]

Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne crafted their first work of fiction in a particular form that they had not approached previously. Translated interview: “Our desire was to explore the relationship between theater and cinema. By neither capturing a play that is already staged for the theater nor making a film adaptation, which would only retain the idea of the play and negate its text, we aimed at explore a form, a style that reaches cinematography by confronting the theatrical text, using various means among which the framing, the looks, the editing, the shift of voices with respect to the bodies, the actors' performance, how one relates to a place that stands between a decorum and a realistic reference. Our intention was not to state: how are we going to make cinema with this damn theater text, but rather to define a style, a cinematographic writing that stems from that very text, that confronts it, which keep in the picture the tension between the stage and the screen. In this adaptation, we try to be faithful to this adage according to which the privilege of an adapted work is to be able to be born twice…” <ref> Luc and Jean-Pierre Dardenne, extract of the press file, January 1986
