Family Constellations[edit]

Family Constellations session

Family Constellations, also known as Systemic Constellations and Systemic Family Constellations, is a pseudoscientific therapeutic method that combines elements of family systems therapy, existential phenomenology, and Zulu beliefs about family. This method aims to reveal and resolve hidden dynamics that span multiple generations within a family.

Conceptual Basis[edit]

Family Constellations integrate existential phenomenology, family systems therapy, and elements of indigenous mysticism. This approach contrasts with the reductionist orientation of scientific psychology, focusing instead on the full spectrum of human experience to grasp deeper meanings.

The method draws from family systems psychology, influenced by figures such as Jacob Moreno, Iván Böszörményi-Nagy, Milton Erickson, Eric Berne, and Virginia Satir. The process also incorporates Zulu spiritual mysticism, which Bert Hellinger experienced during his time in South Africa. Zulu culture emphasizes the importance of ancestors, which is a central feature in the Constellation process.

The Method[edit]

Family Constellations

In a Family Constellations workshop, a facilitator guides a client to set up a Constellation with representatives for family members or abstract concepts. The representatives are arranged intuitively and then observe the dynamics that emerge. The facilitator may reposition the representatives to achieve a healing resolution, which the client then experiences by taking their representative's place.
