Farrukh Sohail Goindi (born 23 August 1960) is a Pakistani writer, political analyst, and publisher. He is the founder of Jumhoori Publications, a publishing house based in Lahore that focuses on progressive literature and Urdu translations of international works. Goindi is known for his involvement in democratic movements in Pakistan and his commentary on South Asian and international affairs.
Early life and education
Goindi was born in Sargodha, Punjab. He moved to Lahore for higher education, where he earned a Master of Arts in Political Science from the University of the Punjab. During his student years, he became involved in left-wing political activism.[1]
Career
Politics and activism
Goindi was an active political worker during the early phases of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP). During the military regime of General Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq, he participated in non-violent struggles for the restoration of democracy. Human rights activist I. A. Rehman characterized Goindi's public identity as being rooted in this political activism, noting his long-standing alignment with left-wing movements in Pakistan.[1] His writings on national politics have been cited in academic research evaluating secularist and Islamist narratives within Pakistan's national identity frameworks.[2]
Journalism and broadcasting
For over three decades, Goindi has written political columns for various Urdu newspapers, including Daily Jang and Daily Nai Baat. He served as a senior consultant for Pakistan Television Corporation (PTV) and hosted the current affairs interview program Tanaazur ("Perspective"), which featured discussions with national intellectuals.[3]
Publishing
Through Jumhoori Publications, Goindi has overseen the translation of international books into Urdu. His work as a publisher includes managing the Urdu translation and distribution of historical texts, including Mahatma Gandhi's autobiography (Talaash-e-Haq). He also managed the translation team for the Pakistani edition of President Xi Jinping's series, The Governance of China.[4]
