Fasha Farshad Mahjoor is the Founder and CEO of Phenomenex, Inc. and Neoteryx, and CEO of Phenova. [1][2]
Business career
Fasha Mahjoor was born in Iran and emigrated to the UK as a child. He attended Manchester Metropolitan University to earn an undergraduate degree in architecture, and then completed his master's degree in architecture at the University of Southern California in 1980. He then formed a boutique architecture firm in Beverly Hills, California. [3] In 1982 Mahjoor left the field of architecture to found Phenomenex in 1982, a distributor of British-made chromatography columns. The company began making its own columns in 1984. [4] The company also employed 477 people by 2007, and was named by the Wall Street Journal as one of the top small businesses in America in 2008. Part of the reason for this comes from Mahjoor's attempts to integrate entertainment activities and other amenities into the workplace. [5] His efforts in this manner were profiled in the book Organizational Behaviour. [6]
In 2011, Fasha acquired Wibby Environmental in Golden, Colorado and then renamed it as Phenova in 2012. [7] He also became the CEO of Phenova. The company manufactures Proficiency Testing Standards and Certified Reference Materials. [8][9] Currently, both Phenomenex and Phenova now employ over 7000 people with offices in 15 different countries. [3]
In 2010, Mahjoor was a finalist for the Greater Los Angeles Entrepreneur of the Year sponsored by Ernst & Young. [10] The company now employs over 700 people with offices in 15 different countries. [3] Though not a practicing architect, he has designed many of the office buildings for his company. [11] In 2013, Mahjoor was named one of the 100 most influential people in the analytical sciences by The Analytical Scientist. [12] He is also the founder of Neoteryx, a manufacturer of microsampling devices used for collecting and testing biological samples. [13]
Other activities
Mahjoor is known in the Los Angeles business community for his humanitarian efforts, which are also applied through his companies. [14] In September 2012, he jumped from the 87th floor of the Shard building in London, Europe's tallest building, to raise money for The Outward Bound Trust, an educational charity. [15] In 2015, he scaled down three additional buildings in London, known as The Cheesegrater, The Gherkin, and The Walkie-Talkie, to raise money for the Trust. [16]
Mahjoor has previously been a board member of the Farhang Foundation. [17] In 2013, he was awarded the Ellis Island Medal of Honor. [18] That year, he was also elected to the Board of Directors for the American Red Cross, Los Angeles Region. [19] Mahjoor is a trustee for The Outward Bound Trust. [20] Most recently, he purchased a vacant property adjacent to Del Amo Fashion Center that SunCal once owned. [21]
