Fawful is a villanous character appearing in the 2003 role-playing video game Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga[1] , and two of its sequels Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time[2] and Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story[3] .

Concept and creation[edit]

Fawful, is a character of the fictional beanish species. He has green skin, blue glasses, a red cloak, and is commonly seen with a big grin. In Bowser's Inside Story after absorbing the power of the dark star, his cloak turns red and blue, and his glasses turn dark red.[4] After being defeated, he has a more spiderlike form, where he is now just a head with legs and arms. He is fully black, outside of his red glasses and white teeth.[5] He speaks in Engrish with many strange metaphors, many of which related to food.[6]

Appearances[edit]

Fawful first appears in the 2003 role-playing game Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga as the secondary antagonist alongside Cackletta. He blocks Mario and Luigi's progress many times during the game. He steals the beanstar from Luigi late into the game. During his last fight, he expresses that he wishes to me more than a simple minion, foreshadowing his role in the third game.

In the 2005 game Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, he appears with a much smaller role. He is the owner of Fawful's Bean n Badge, a shop to buy beans. He is only visited by Baby Mario and Luigi, who he does not recognize.

In the 2009 game Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story, he is the main villain, even having his own minion, a pig named Midbus. He steals the dark star and takes over Princess Peach's castle, in an attempt to take over the world. He is defeated by Bowser, Mario and Luigi.

Fawful reappears in the 2017 and 2018 remakes of Superstar Saga and Bowser's Inside Story named Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions[7] and Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey[8]

Fawful appears as a cameo role in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, as a collectible Spirit.[9]

Reception[edit]

Fawful has become one of the most popular Mario villains.[10][11] His broken english made his quotes very funny and popular for many fans. He was nominated for the "Most Quotable Character" award in 2009, but lost.[12] One of his most popular quotes "I HAVE FURY" was inclued in Nintendo Power's collection of iconic Nintendo quotes. [10] GamesRadar put Fawful as one of the best video game villains in their ranking.[13]
