The Fear Street Trilogy consists of horror movies developed and produced by 20th Century Fox and Chernin Entertainment. After The Walt Disney Company purchased most of 21st Century Fox's assets and subsidiaries, they absorbed the Fear Street trilogy as well. Ultimately, Netflix bought the distribution rights to the films, with the movies scheduled to be released exclusively as Netflix Original Films for the streaming service.
The series was teased by Netflix during a preview of their 2021 release slate in January of that year, noting the unusual release schedule for the trilogy to be released in one calendar year.[1] The series of films are scheduled for release, in the summer of 2021, over a three week span: July 2, July 9, and July 16.[2][3]
Development[edit]
In October 2015, a film based on Stine's Fear Street book series was announced as being in development from 20th Century Fox and Chernin Entertainment.[4] Centered around a young gay lesbian couple, navigating their rocky relationship when they're targeted by crazy horrors in their small town;[5] the script was written by Kyle Killen while a second draft was scripted by Zak Olkewicz.[6] Leigh Janiak was hired to direct the first and third installments, while Alex Ross Perry was scheduled to serve as director on the second film.[7]
In January 2019, it was announced that the first film in a scheduled trilogy was scheduled to be released theatrically in June 2020.[8] It was later pulled from its original release, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.[9] By March 2019, it was revealed that principal photography had wrapped on the series of films, with Leigh Janiak serving as director on all three movies.[10] Leigh also served as co-writer on a new draft of the script with Phil Graziadei.[6]
In April 2020, Chernin Entertainment ended their distribution deal with 20th Century Studios and made a multi-year first-look deal with Netflix.[11] Following studio changes, after the acquisition by The Walt Disney Company, distribution rights were sold to Netflix in August 2020. The streaming service confirmed plans to continue the unconventional original plan of releasing each installment within close proximity of each other, at one month apart.[6]
In May 2021, the official trailer released by Netflix announced the respective films' credits, release dates, and official titles as: Fear Street: Part One - 1994, Fear Street: Part Two - 1978, and Fear Street: Part Three - 1666. The trilogy of films, will be R-rated, with original novel series writer R.L. Stine praising the direction and adaptations of his books.[2]
