J.C. Bratton (born March 3, 1976) is an American short story author, primarily in the horror, mystery, and thriller genres. She is best known for her young adult fiction short story thriller "Who's at the Door?". Bratton is a strong advocate for self-publishing and has appeared on Self-Publishing Review.[1] She owns a publishing company for independent authors called Blue Milk Publishing.

Early life[edit]

Bratton (birth name Jenny Hayes) was born on a US Army base in Würzburg, Germany, to James Craig, a small business owner, and Young Ju Shim, a homemaker. She grew up in Ohio and Oklahoma. As a teen, she was heavily influenced by the works of R.L. Stine, Lois Duncan, and Richard Matheson.[2]

Career[edit]

Bratton self-published her first fiction short story, "Who's at the Door?" in January of 2020. It received positive reviews from Publisher's Weekly, which compared it to R.L. Stine’s The Betrayal, S.A. Hunter’s Scary Mary.[3] Her second short story, "Parasomnia", was released in June of 2020. Self-Publishing Review gave it 4-stars: "...the combination of self-exploration and mystical romance makes this a quick and intriguing read."[4] Bratton's third short story, "Dollhouse", was released in October 2020.[5]

JC is the director, writer, producer and star of the recurring podcast, Things That Go Bump in the Night (2021). The podcast focuses on JC's stories as well as topics related to urban legends, horror, superstitions, and anything "creepy." The title comes from JC's copyrighted collection (omnibus) of short stories.[6]

Personal life[edit]

Bratton currently resides in San Jose, California.
