"Fear of a Krabby Patty" is the first segment of the first episode of the American animated television series SpongeBob SquarePants. It first aired on Nickelodeon in the United States on May 6, 2005. The episode was written by C.H. Greenblatt and Paul Tibbitt, and the animation was directed by Alan Smart. Greenblatt also functioned as storyboard director (his last credit on the show), and Zeus Cervas worked as storyboard artist.
The episode revolves around Mr. Krabs making the Krusty Krab a 24-hour restaurant, schemed as a plan by Plankton to get SpongeBob to tell him the Krabby Patty formula. Eventually, SpongeBob overworks himself and starts hallucinating Krabby Patties, so he enlists in therapy from Plankton, dressed up as a psychiatrist.
This episode is the first to release after the movie, and the first without Stephen Hillenburg as executive producer, replaced by Paul Tibbitt. Fear of a Krabby Patty received positive reviews from critics.
Plot[edit]
Mr. Krabs creates a new schedule for the Krusty Krab, 6AM till 11PM, much to Squidward's frustration. Shortly after that, Mr. Krabs sees that Plankton has made his restaurant the Chum Bucket a 23-hour restaurant. Persistent to still be financially on top of Plankton, Mr. Krabs announces that the Krusty Krab will be a 24-hour service.
Squidward and Krabs become tired quick, but SpongeBob is still as awake as ever. Plankton ups the ante by ordering 10,000 patties. After a while, SpongeBob begins to get so tired he starts serving garbage. Krabs comes to his office to confront him, but SpongeBob hallucinates a Krabby Patty instead, sending him into shock. Krabs is able to calm SpongeBob down, and advises SpongeBob to talk to a psychiatrist. Just then, Plankton drops a business card in SpongeBob's office for counselling from Plankton, disguised as a therapist named "Dr. Peter Lankton".
SpongeBob heads to the Chum Bucket, disguised as "Peter Lankton's" office. Plankton, dressed up in a disguise, talks to SpongeBob about his phobia, and soon comes up with a plan to get the formula out of him. This plan fails, and so does his later plans.
Plankton attempts to hypnotise SpongeBob to tell him the formula, but he falls asleep, revealing his problem of not sleeping enough. After a rest, SpongeBob feels much better, thanks Plankton, and heads back to the Krusty Krab, leaving Plankton having no formula.
Back at the Krusty Krab, Mr. Krabs reveals that he has lowered the restaurant's schedule from 24 hours to 23.
Reception[edit]
The episode received positive reviews. Critic Ian Jane from DVD Talk praised a DVD featuring the episode, saying "As is typical of the series in general, these episodes have got a lot of great gags that are funny for both kids and adults alike. Add to that a cast of likeable characters and a truly innocent sense of wide eyed wonder and fun and you've got yourself another winner."[1]
