The Federation of African Medical Students’ Associations (FAMSA) is an independent, nonpolitical alliance of medical students’ associations across Africa, recognized by the World Health Organization and African Union as the official international forum of African Medical Students.

It was founded in 1968 as a Nigerian, Ghanaian and Ugandan initiative and aims to foster cooperation and amity among African Medical students. It currently maintains 250 member colleges from all regions in Africa.

The proposal materialized into the founding of FAMSA in September 1968 in Accra, Ghana, and the permanent headquarters were established in 1977 in Ibadan, Nigeria. Since then, membership has been growing and is extended to formal medical students associations within the continent.

Aims and Objectives[edit]

• To establish professional contact with every Medical Students Association in Africa

• To promote exchange of knowledge by international correspondences, publication of medical journals and professional exchanges of students between various countries.

FAMSA is constituted of five sub-units that coordinate the flow of ideas and rollout of activities:

  • The Executive Council
  • Standing Committees
  • The Headquarters
  • The General Assembly
  • Medical Students’ Associations (MSAs)

Executive Council[edit]

This is FAMSA’s core sub-unit that constitutes the office holders elected at the General Assembly and the Administrator of the Permanent Headquarters. Members of this council include

  • President - the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) responsible for coordination of council activities, and liaison affairs of the federation, in tandem with the General Secretary and the Administrator.
  • Vice President.
  • General Secretary - responsible for forging fruitful connections with all international organizations. Additionally, the General Secretary is responsible for the central administration and correspondence on behalf of FAMSA.

  • Special Executives (2) – responsible for enhancing communication between the Anglophone and Francophone associations by translating documents and publications and disseminating the same.
  • Chairpersons of the standing committees (see below)
  • Ex Officios -These are previously-served officials who act as veterans to the council, for consultation and guidance on crucial matters.

Standing Committees[edit]

All activities are coordinated by one of the following Standing Committees, each of which are headed by a chairperson who forms part of the Executive Council:

  • Standing Committee on Health and Environment (SCOHE) - Conducts all the work done within FAMSA in the field of Health and Environment.
  • Standing Committee on Medical Education and Research (SCOMER) - Carries the authority to furnish the member associations with the FAMSA regulations and guidelines for medical education and research activities
  • Standing Committee on Professional Exchange (SCOPE) - In charge of drawing up detailed programs for the health-educative school-covering elective postings and activities, information exchange conference and study tours.
  • Standing Committee on Publications (SCOPUB) - Manages FAMSA publications including the AFROMEDICA Journal, newsletters and assists other member associations generate their own publications.
  • Standing Committee on Population Activity (SCOPA) - Concerned with ways and means of keeping the population growth at a level compatible with optimal standards of living.

Headquarters[edit]

FAMSA’s headquarters are located at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, with the caretaker association being the University of Ibadan Medical Students’ Association (UIMSA). The Headquarters serves as the center for archives, a focal point for membership recruitment, interagency collaboration and partnership-building. It also assumes the functions of the executive council when its tenure lapses.

General Assembly[edit]

This is the highest authority and policy making branch of FAMSA that holds meetings annually.

The purpose of the General Assembly is primarily to disseminate information through scientific sessions held on topical health issues. In addition, workshops are held to discuss the issues that emerge in the papers. The aim of the workshops is to draft the resolutions of the General Assembly, which are then discussed and adopted at a plenary session.

Furthermore, the General Assembly provides a platform for FAMSA programs in the preceding year to be evaluated, new programs to be initiated and a novel FAMSA Executive Board to be elected. These are usually done at the Business meetings during the General Assembly
