Felicia Montes a.k.a. Fe Evaone is a Xicana multimedia artist, activist, healing arts practitioner, FEMcee, professor, educator, poet, photographer and organizer known for her community engagement centered arts including work based on social and spiritual change as she works on the front lines of activism and organizing based in Los Angeles[1].

Biography (or Early Life and Education)[edit]

Felicia Montes was born in El Paso, Texas/Tejas amidst the Chican@ pride movement to parents who were highly involved in community action and engagement.[2] Montes grew up surrounded by community action and engagement for social justice advocacy, and is vastly familiar with meetings for social change. Continuing this passion for education and empowerment, Montes received her Bachelors in Arts in World Arts and Cultures with a minor in ChicanX Studies from UCLA. She then went on to receive her Masters in Chicana/Chicano Studies at California State University Northridge (CSUN) and Masters in Fine Arts in Public Arts Practice from Otis College of Arts and Design. Since 1997, she has been creating altars and assisting in the development of Day of the Dead ceremonies and festivals focused on Aztec and Chicana/o artistic and spiritual traditions.[3]

Art  (or Notable Works, Exhibitions, Projects, Collections)[edit]

  • Montes is know for work with community arts engagement centers Self Help Graphics and Art, Proyecto Pastoral and the United Farm Workers (UFW).  She has also been influential in Los Angeles transnational art and organizing efforts including work with the Zapatistas, Peace & Dignity Journeys and La Red Xicana Indigena.
  • In 2011, Montes self-published her own book “Ten Fe” , where on the cover, she poses in front of a background of La Virgen de Guadalupe. This book with the subtitle flor y canto includes performance pieces and poetry by Montes.
  • We Are The Land for “Day of the Dead 2008” at Self Help Graphics & Art An installation piece honoring El Dia De los Muertos, Indigenous land and the ancestors who were legacy remains in the heart of the land that was stolen. It’s a map where guests were able to apply their own written prayers there. It started off with only four on there and multiplied.
  • Felicia ‘Fe' Montes' program and project La Botanica del Barrio focuses on exchanging, creating, and recording health approaches for and through the environment. The key project of La Botanica del Barrio is the Rolling Remedios Cart, a non-traditional mobile medicine cart that aims to teach, dialogue, and record health remedies, recipes, herb and plant uses, and Mexican traditional medicine.
