FemLink-Art

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

FemLink-Art, the international video artists collective brings together 149 women video artists from 64 countries to create video collages. FemLInk-Art's mission is to create a link between throughout the world between women video artists and their artwork; and, to assist women artists who live outside Europe and the USA who have difficulties creating, promoting, distributing, exhibiting and screening their art work. The idea for the collective began in 2005 when French visual artist and curator, Véronique Sapin and American intermedia art, C. M. Judge proposed a worldwide video project that would engage women video artists to create video shorts around common themes. During the first nine years, FemLink-Art video collages were exhibited and screened at 110 art centers, museums and galleries in 42 countries.

History and Structure[edit]

In 2000, Veronique Sapin and C. M. Judge met at the Videoformes Festival in Clermont-Ferrand, France where they both were exhibiting video installations. A friendship ensued as each admired the other’s work. Sapin suggested to Judge that they collaborate on a project together. As they explored possibilities to make work together, a larger vision developed which would include other women video artists from around the world. Both understood the lack of opportunity to see women’s video art and to make personal connections to other women artists. They coined the term "FemLink" to describe the collective of artists they intended form and envisioned creating video collages. Sapin began to do outreach globally to invite artists to create video shorts for FemLink-Art. The response was overwhelmingly positive with thirty-two artists accepting the invitation to participate in the first theme, FRAGILITY. Judge worked in the United States promoting the collages through feminist associations such as The Women’s Caucus for Art, The Feminist Art Project and university programs.

Sapin proposed a purposely simple structure for the collages which has been used for all of the Collective’s work: one artist from each country is invited to create an original one- to two-minute video around a common theme. Each video must be created expressly for the collage with each artist’s contribution of her/his singular video artwork forming an essential component of the collective collage which is also viewed as a work of art in its own right. As videos are collected for the project they are added to the collage sequentially as received without regard to content. Each artist's creative response is valued with respect to the many diverse interpretations of the themes. Artists retains their author rights and iare free to screen their work as they wish.

FemLink-Art is a curated project by personal invitation only and does not accept unsolicited works. A variation on the FemLink-Art structure was developed specifically for the topic PORTRAIT OF A FEMALE VISUAL ARTIST. In an effort to extend further links for women artists, FemLink invited male video artists to create portraits of woman artists.

FemLink collages have been exhibited as video installations with multiple projections and screened as single channel videos.

Video Collages (2006 -2016)[edit]

The FemLink-Art Collective has created ten video collages during its first decade. The themes are: FRAGILITY, RESISTANCE, PREOCCUPATION, AGGRESSION, VITAL, WONDER, MALE, PROTEST, FEMALE and PORTRAIT OF A WOMAN ARTIST.

Manifesto[edit]

Inspired by the article “Art et Féminisme: le malentendu?” by Nadine Plateau, Veronique Sapin developed the essay Echoing the World which has served as the manifesto for the feminist underpinnings of the FemLink-Art Collective. Emphasizing the enriching aspects of cultural diversity, a “world beyond nationalities” and the bonds between women video artists, Sapin outlines the futility of divisionary aesthetics in favor of creating an environment where multiple view points from around the world can be expressed, experienced and valued. Aspiring to the universal, FemLink artists are free to express their singular vision which may or may not reflect their personal “territory.”

The historical reality of the pervasive abuse of women and devaluation of their creativity, frames the Collective’s focus on embracing “the power of culture and art to serve human values, create dialogue, promote peace and acknowledge others.”

Actions[edit]

Training

Understanding the challenges of women from around the world who live in countries with limited or no access to video production equipment and facilities, FemLink-Art with the financial aid of UNESCO, provided training to artists who have an interest in discovering video as an expressive medium. FemLink-Art’s partnership with Videofémmes in Quebec, Canada provided training in March 2007 to four African artists: Félicité Codjo (Senegal), Ameyovi Homawoo (Togo), Bill Jouélany (Congo) and Suzanne Ouedraogo (Burkina Faso).
