Fernando Porta Angulo was a Chilean naval officer who served as Commander-in-chief of the Chilean Navy from 1968 to 1970.[1]
Biography
Porta pursued a career as an officer in the Chilean Navy. By 1948, as a lieutenant commander, he was commanding the naval vessel Colo-Colo in southern Chile.[2] He subsequently held senior positions within the Navy, including Director of the Litoral, and eventually attained flag rank.
As a rear admiral, Porta held a number of senior commands before becoming Commander-in-Chief of the Chilean Fleet. On 17 December 1968, he relinquished command of the Fleet to Rear Admiral Hugo Tirado and succeeded Admiral Ramón Barros González as Commander-in-Chief of the Navy.[3]
Porta headed the Navy during the final years of the presidency of Eduardo Frei Montalva. His tenure included the entry into service of Papudo, described at the time as the first anti-submarine vessel built in Chile. He remained Commander-in-Chief until 16 October 1970, when he was succeeded by Tirado.[1]
