Venture Capital Investor and Entrepreneur

Fernando Wagner da Silva (Rio de Janeiro, November 1, 1972) is a Brazilian venture capital investor who holds a Master's degree in Computer Science from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), co-supervised by the Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics (IMPA). He also holds a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from the same institution. His research projects at COPPE/UFRJ and IMPA were awarded by the Brazilian Computer Society (SBC) and UNESCO. [1][2]

Career

Fernando entered the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro in 1991, at the age of 18. He was one of only three students to graduate in the 1991 class of the mathematics bachelor's program at UFRJ. After graduation, he was selected for COPPE/UFRJ's Master's program in Computer Science. During his master's research, he was invited by the Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics (IMPA) to complete his thesis and work as a researcher at the Visgraf Lab. He received his Master's degree in 1997. His research involved developing motion capture techniques, resulting in special effects used in the film industry. This research was recognized by the Brazilian Computer Society and UNESCO. In the early 2000s, Fernando was invited by Sony Imageworks to be a motion capture coordinator for the film Beowulf, but declined due to scheduling conflicts.

In 1998, Fernando began his Ph.D. at COPPE and IMPA. His research combined motion capture, physical simulation, and artificial intelligence. His work as a computer graphics researcher resulted in over 50 scientific papers published in Brazilian, US, and European journals, magazines, and conferences. [3][4][5][6] In late 1999, Fernando was invited by Opportunity, one of Brazil's most prestigious investment banks, to join the investment board of Opportunity's venture capital fund, Innovate.

From 2002 to 2008, Fernando served as an executive in two Opportunity-invested companies (w-Aura and APPI), focusing on turnaround and business development. In 2009, he was invited by Rio Bravo Investimentos to perform a turnaround in its portfolio company, WNet.

In 2013, Fernando was invited by Bozano Investimentos to lead investments for the Criatec 2 fund, Brazil's largest venture capital fund. He has travelled extensively throughout Brazil giving lectures and presentations on venture capital and entrepreneurship. [7]

Personal Interests

Fernando is passionate about emerging technologies and innovation, often translating his personal interests into business ventures. His expertise in various scientific fields led to his appointment as an advisor for aerospace, biotechnology, and communications at Axia Ventures, an Argentine investment firm. He also served as a board member at ABRAGAMES (Brazilian Game Companies Association) and executive manager at TecGames (a game company incubator at PUC-Rio). Fernando was also invited by Finep to participate in the selection process for companies seeking Brazilian government funding programs.

Entrepreneurship

Fernando has extensive entrepreneurial experience, including developing the Rio 2004 Olympic bid website, the first website of an Olympic bid candidate city. He was also the founder of BaseOi, a major gaming portal in Brazil.
