Ffern

Ffern is a small fragrance house based in Somerset, England.[1] Founded in 2018[2] and run by brother and sister Owen Mears and Emily Cameron, Ffern uses traditional methods and natural fragrance ingredients to create small-batch fragrances inspired by the seasons. They release one fragrance for each solstice and equinox: Winter, Spring, Summer and Autumn. Ffern keeps a limited list of names for whom to blend each new seasonal fragrance: the Ffern ledger.[3]

Sustainability is at the heart of the brand.[4] Notably, Ffern is the first fragrance brand to use mycelium packaging, working with the Magical Mushroom Company to create compostable bottle trays made from mycelium and agricultural waste.[5]
History
Naming Ffern
The naming of Ffern was inspired by a defining moment in the history of fragrance: the creation of the first fougère fragrance.[6] In the 1840s, Victorians across Britain were gripped by what Charles Kingsley named Pteridomania - a mania for all things fern-related.[7] This fern madness was enabled partly by the accidental invention of the Wardian case, an early kind of terrarium which allowed ferns and other exotic plants to be transported from the furthest reaches of the British Empire, and which preserved them from the industrial smog of England's cities.[8]
Pteridomania resulted in the creation of a wildly popular ladies' fragrance, Houbigant's 'Fougère Royale' (1882).[9] Fougère means 'fern' in French, and 'Fougère Royale' created a whole new family of fragrances that did not so much reflect the scent of ferns (which is very subtle) as their cultural popularity.
Association with the Robert family
Ffern's nose, François Robert, is a fourth-generation master perfumer. His great grandfather was Joseph Henri Robert, who in 1884 developed a new process for extracting pure fragrance oils, or absolutes, from plants. This opened up a wealth of new and powerful natural ingredients to perfumers, and it is this story that first inspired Ffern's founder to begin experimenting with natural fragrance oils.
