File Destined is a singleplayer psychological horror video game developed and published by Metavision Studio. The game was released on February 25, 2023, on PC via the Steam platform.

Development

As Metavision Studio was founded with the idea of being an outsource company, the developers and artists worked on various different projects at different times. The idea of developing an in-house game emerged as a side project to be continued whenever the team had free time or was waiting for new contracts to be signed. With this mindset, the project started around the first quarter of 2022. Due to being a side project, it was neglected and delayed at various times to focus on the actual company work. This caused the initial game design to be changed multiple times as more ideas were discussed and different timelines needed to be met. As a result, the end product was only a part of the initial design, and the remaining ideas are planned to be incorporated into upcoming games. As the studio's main and only focus was development with Unreal Engine, the latest version at the time (Unreal Engine 4.27) was chosen as the engine for the game. Throughout the development, Unreal Engine 5.1 was released, and with the hope of keeping up with the new technologies and changes coming with Unreal Engine 5, the project was upgraded to the latest version.

Release

As it was a side project and aimed to be kept small, the initial estimation of the development time was around 3 months. Being started in the first quarter of 2022, the release date was approximated as the third quarter of 2022. However, due to the expected workload, delays occurred, invalidating the initial approximation. Towards the end of 2022, a timeslot appeared for the team to fully focus back on the game. As the development picked up speed, a new release date was set for February 2023. With development nearing completion in January 2023, the game was announced on Steam with a "Coming Soon" status. On February 20, 2023, the release date of the game was announced as February 25, 2023.

Plot

The story of the game focuses on a police officer named Oliver Hamilton. It is stated at the beginning of the game that there is a cutting-edge new technology for solving crime cases. Oliver Hamilton initiates a simulation to investigate an unsolved file about the Destined company. An AI named Liz helps Oliver understand the basics of using the VR technology to reveal the mystery behind the unsolved crime case.

Gameplay

The game invites players to take control of Oliver Hamilton in a first-person perspective and try to solve the case. It takes place in various locations, such as a hospital, circus, and a home setting. Some items are scattered around these locations for the player to inspect and find clues about the crime. Players are expected to find items related to the crime and put the pieces together to understand why and how the story unfolded. The final piece of the story is given at the end of the game as a cinematic for the players to fully understand what happened with the Destined company.
