The Fire Department of Montgomery Township is a fire company that serves the 10.7 square mile Montgomery Township, which is located in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. It provides fire services to the township as well as mutual aid to surrounding townships when needed. The department was founded in 2002. This particular department is a combination department, meaning that it is staffed weekdays with paid firefighters from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and the rest of the time, as well as holidays, it is covered by volunteers. Volunteer members may respond whenever they are available.[1] The department also has a fire police unit used to direct traffic and control the public while on calls.

Stations and Apparatus[edit]

The Fire Department of Montgomery Township operates out of two fire stations and both stations together house a total of one ladder truck, two squad trucks, one engine truck, and one utility truck, as well as a multitude of special response apparatus.[2]

History[edit]

The Township of Montgomery was originally covered with fire service by the Colmar Volunteer Fire Company, located in Hatfield Township. In the middle of 2001, Montgomery Township began a process of chartering its own department to form a combination department. The purpose of this move was to combat the rapidly decreasing number of volunteer firefighters nationwide. The department was officially born on July 22, 2002 after passage of a resolution by the township supervisors. The first official call for the department was December 22, 2002 at a local office supply store for an odor of smoke.[3]
