Fishermoss Primary School is a primary school in Portlethen, Aberdeenshire. It is the smaller of the two primaries in the area, and covers a much smaller catachment area. It is near to Portlethen Academy. The school also has a nursery.[1]

History[edit]

The school was opened on 8 January 1987. By 1997, it had grown to 400 pupils.[2] The nursery was opened in 1998,[3] in a temporary structure.[4] In 2020, construction began on a permanent structure to replace the temporary one which housed the nursery.[5]

Controversy[edit]

The school opened without a crossing patrol, a decision criticised by parents. The council stated that the school did not have enough pupils to warrant one. Pupils and parents staged a protest that saw them stop traffic with a mass crossing, a move subsequently criticised by Grampian Police for putting children in further danger.[6] In November 1989, the chief constable of the police force stated that there should be a crossing patroller, following a police study.[7] In 1992, parents were still campaigning but for a pelican crossing rather than a crossing patroller, due to increased traffic levels.[8]
