St Maria Goretti RC Primary School is a primary school in Cranhill, Glasgow. The school is named after St Maria Goretti and is housed on the same site as Lamlash Nursery School. It takes pupils from P1-P7.

History[edit]

In 2015, the school received national media attention after the school's lollipop lady, Betty Dickson, was banned from waving to schoolchildren as it allegedly breached health and safety rules.[1][2] The ban was criticised by parents at the school, who subsequently nominated Dickson for a Cordia staff recognition and excellence award.[1] The attention led to Dickson appearing on the TV show TFI Friday, where host Chris Evans gave her a weekend trip to Blackpool and £500 in spending money.[3]

The school has frequently been the target of vandalism, a common problem for primary schools in Glasgow.[4][5][6] On 12 January 2021, the school was vandalised in the sixth such incident at the school since the end of the previous term in December 2020.[7][8]

On 22 January 2021, a fire broke out at the primary school at around 5.15pm.[8][9]Ironically, less than a month before, pupils at the school had teamed up with Clydesmill Fire Station to record a film about fire safety.[10][11]
