Fizz, stylised as FIZZ, is a band from London composed of musicians Orla Gartland, Dorothy Clark (aka dodie), Greta Isaac and Martin Luke Brown. Their debut single, “High in Brighton” was released in June 2023. They later released "Close One" in July 2023, followed by third single, "As Good As It Gets" in August 2023 and fourth single, "You, Me, Lonely" in September 2023, all from their upcoming album The Secret to Life.

History

Fizz came together in "a whirlwind of pure joy and escapism, inverting everything each artist knew about making music to produce an album with fun and a love of the craft at its core."[1][2]

The members are friends and fans of each other's work, having previously collaborated on individual projects.[3][4] Their upcoming album The Secret to Life was recorded over a two-week period[5] at Middle Farm Studios with Peter Miles.[6]

Musical style

FIZZ's musical style has been described as psychedelic, maximalist and theatrical.[7]

Their debut album ‘The Secret to Life’ spans multiple genres, "the album leaves room for all four members to showcase themselves. Orla takes lead vocals on the characteristically breezy “Close One”; Greta shines on the raging banger “As Good As It Gets”; Martin does his best Elton impression on the short but sweet, bouncing piano tune “Rocket League”, before dodie calms things down for the starkly minimalist, acoustic ballad “You, Me, Lonely”. This is a supergroup, after all, so it’s nice to hear each of the component artists have their moment. They merge back together in time for “The Grand Finale”, though: a suitably melodramatic farewell sprawling well over five minutes, armed to the teeth with yet more choral singing, theatrical piano, misty-eyed lyrics, and even a brief guitar solo. “Bohemian Rhapsody” it is not, but it is a laugh."[8]

The band relied on real instruments and recording live takes of songs straight to tape. This, as suggested in interviews gives the music its 60s / 70s feeling.[9]
