Flora Cameron Craig RRC QAIMNS was a Principal Matron in the British military.

Early life

Craig was born on 1 March 1882 in India. Her father, James Craig, worked for the Indian Civil Service. Her mother was Frances Craig nee Cameron. She was educated in Penrith and Brussels.[1]

Education and early career

Craig did her nurse training at Glasgow Royal Infirmary from January 1903 until December 1905.[2] She was appointed staff nurse with the Queen Alexandra's Imperial Military Nursing Service (QAIMNS) on 29 August 1907.[3] She is listed on the census of 1911 at Herbert Hospital, Woolwich.[4] She was promoted to sister on 18 May 1917 and was acting matron from 20 September 1915. She was noted as matron in her war records on 3 January 1931 and was principal matron of Mediterranean stations from 27 September 1935 based in Cairo, Egypt.[5] Her military records show she worked in Karachi, Egypt, Netley and Aldershot.

She retired on 1 March 1939 after 31 years as a military nurse. She spent some time at Roydon in Essex on her retirement.

Death

Craig died on 17 April 1977 at Queen’s House, Kelso. She was 95 years old with cause of death given as senility.[6]

Honours

Craig was awarded the Royal Red Cross on 1 January 1917 when serving in Egypt.[7] She was awarded the Medaille de la Reine Elisabeth avec Croix Rouge on 8 March 1920.[8][9]
