Hartenstein was born in Mainz to a German mother and an American father[1], and began playing basketball at the age of twelve.[2] The center made it into the German junior national team[3] as well as the roster of the second-division club TSV Speyer.
He played during the 1996/97 season at Thurston High School[4][5] on the West Coast of the United States in the state of Oregon, and from 1997 at the University of Oregon in the NCAA. He appeared in a total of 112 games for the college team, averaging 3.6 points and 3.7 rebounds per game.[6] In 2001, he returned to Germany and joined Avitos Gießen (later Gießen 46ers) in the Basketball Bundesliga.[7] After eight mostly successful years in the university city, during which he also became team captain, Hartenstein was unable to reach an agreement with the club regarding a contract extension and subsequently transferred within the Bundesliga to the Artland Dragons in Quakenbrück, Lower Saxony. In the Artland jersey, he competed not only in Germany’s top league but also in European competitions.[8]
Hartenstein had a very physical style of play, with his greatest strength being rebounding. Notable weaknesses included his high foul count and his free-throw shooting, where he at times had such a low success rate that he attempted unconventional shooting techniques (including one-handed shots).
After the end of his professional career in 2012, he occasionally played for the regional league team of TSV Quakenbrück alongside his coaching duties.
Starting in 2012, Hartenstein coached the JBBL team Young Dragons, with whom he became German champion in 2014. From the 2014/15 season onward, he also coached Quakenbrück's NBBL team[1] and, beginning in 2015, served as assistant coach for the Artland Dragons in the 2nd Bundesliga ProB. In January 2017, he and Christian Greve jointly took over as head coaches of the Quakenbrück team following the dismissal of Dragan Dojčin.[2] After Greve's departure in June 2018, Hartenstein became the sole head coach in Quakenbrück.[3] After the team managed only three wins in the previous ten games under his leadership and was tied on points with the relegation spots in 14th place in the 2nd Bundesliga ProA, Hartenstein and the Artland Dragons parted ways at the end of November 2019.[4]
Hartenstein has a son, Isaiah, and a daughter.
In December 2024, he acquired shares in the operating company of the Bundesliga club Ratiopharm Ulm together with business partners, including his son Isaiah and Adam Hess.[1]
