Franziska Nori (* 1968 in Rome) is a German-Italian art historian, curator and museum director. She lives in Frankfurt am Main.[1]
Career[edit]
Franziska Nori studied Cultural Anthropology, Romance Studies and Art History at the Goethe University in Frankfurt.[2]
Since November 2014, she has been director of the Frankfurter Kunstverein, for which she has curated exhibitions with contemporary artists such as Trevor Paglen[3], Jeremy Shaw[4], Melanie Bonajo[5] and Forensic Architecture[6] as well as numerous thematic exhibitions.[7] With a focus on art and science, she conceptualised exhibitions on changing human perception in virtual worlds ("Perception is Reality", 2017/2018)[8] or the perspective of learning algorithms and Artificial Intelligence ("I Am here to Learn", 2018).[9] She has also repeatedly used her work to publicly debate the changing self-image of humans in relation to nature and other living beings, for example in the exhibitions "Trees of Life - Narratives for a Damaged Planet" (2019/2020) and "The Intelligence of Plants" (2021/2022).[10] With "The Big Tree" by Indonesian artist Joko Avianto (2015)[11] and "Die Große Illusion" by artist duo Winter/Hörbelt (2018/2019)[12], she realised large-format outdoor sculptures on the building of the Frankfurter Kunstverein.
From 2007 to 2014, she was director of the Centro di Cultura Contemporanea Strozzina at Palazzo Strozzi in Florence[13] and from 2000 to 2003, she headed the digital art department at the Museum für Angewandte Kunst in Frankfurt.[14] From 1996 to 2006 she worked as a freelance curator for modern and contemporary art for the Museum Moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig Wien (mumok)[15], the Schirn Kunsthalle in Frankfurt[16], the Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs at Brown University[17], the Transmediale Festival[18], the Museum of Contemporary Art Belgrade[19], the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid and the Fundación la Caixa in Palma de Mallorca[20], among others. In 2011 she completed the "Getty Museum Leadership Institute Programme" at Claremont Graduate University.[21]
Since 2011, Franziska Nori has been Professor of Museology and Curatorial Practices of Contemporary Art at Marist College and Lorenzo de' Medici Institute.[22] She has published numerous essays and catalogues on contemporary art.
Under her management, the Frankfurter Kunstverein was honoured with the Binding Kulturpreis in 2019 as an outstanding Frankfurt cultural institution. The prize is valued at €50,000.[23] In 2020, the exhibition "Jeremy Shaw - Phase Shifting Index" received the €25,000 "Ausgezeichnet Ausgestellt" prize from the Dr Marschner Foundation for the best curatorial concept.[24] In the same year, Nori was awarded the title of Honorary Academician by the Accademia di Belle Arti di Firenze.[25] In 2022, the exhibition "Three Doors – Forensic Architecture/Forensis, Initiative 19. Februar Hanau, Initiative in Gedenken an Oury Jalloh" received the art curator prize from art magazine.[26]
