The Fongu festival is a festival that is been celebrated by the people of Opobo Kingdom in Rivers State, Nigeria. Fongu festival is dedicated to the water spirits, based on the belief that the water spirits migrated to celebrate on land in August and September.[1]

To honor these spirits, the Opobo's holds a masquerade celebration. The populace thought that if the festival wasn't held, many boats would perish in the typically rough seas of the time. The festival served as a kind of ritual to invoke the water spirits and request a certain amount of fish to be harvested during a trying time.[1]
