The Ford Mustang Mach 4 is a proposed four-door sports sedan being developed by Ford Motor Company as an expansion of the Ford Mustang model line. The vehicle is expected to complement the traditional two-door Mustang and would represent the first production four-door Mustang in the model's history. As of August 2026, Ford had not formally announced the vehicle or confirmed its production specifications.
A physical prototype was reportedly shown to Ford dealers at a private meeting in Las Vegas in August 2026.[2] According to reports from attendees, the vehicle was approximately comparable in size and proportions to the Porsche Panamera. Ford reportedly indicated a starting price of less than US$40,000 and a 0 to 60 mph acceleration time of less than four seconds. The model is expected to enter production around 2028 or 2029, with the 2029 model year being cited as a possible launch date.
Development
The possibility of a four-door Mustang emerged publicly during the development of the seventh-generation Mustang. A four-door Mustang sketch was included in Ford's official material accompanying the September 2022 unveiling of the S650 Mustang, indicating that Ford had considered expanding the model beyond its traditional two-door configuration.[2]
In February 2025, Ford filed a trademark application for the name Mach 4. The filing generated speculation that the name could be used for a four-door Mustang, following the naming convention established by the Ford Mustang Mach-E. The trademark itself did not confirm the existence or production of a vehicle.[3]
Ford subsequently indicated that it was considering expanding the Mustang family. In 2026, Ford Blue and Model e president Andrew Frick acknowledged that, despite the decline of the traditional sedan market in North America, a segment of customers continued to show interest in conventional passenger cars. Ford chief executive officer Jim Farley also stated that the company was interested in expanding the Mustang family provided that new derivatives retained the character and performance associated with the nameplate.[4]
Design and engineering
The Mach 4 is expected to adopt a four-door liftback body style while retaining styling characteristics associated with the Mustang. Dealers who saw the prototype in August 2026 reportedly compared its dimensions and overall appearance with the Porsche Panamera. The vehicle is intended to provide substantially greater rear-seat space than the two-door Mustang while retaining a performance-oriented character.[2]
Reports have suggested that the Mach 4 could use an extended version of the S650 architecture underpinning the seventh-generation Mustang. Such an approach would allow Ford to reuse an existing rear-wheel-drive platform rather than developing a dedicated architecture for the sedan. Earlier reports had also considered the possibility of an electric platform shared with other future Ford vehicles.[5]
Powertrain
No powertrain has been officially confirmed by Ford. Reports have suggested that the Mach 4 could use engines already offered in the Mustang range, including the turbocharged 2.3-litre EcoBoost four-cylinder and naturally aspirated 5.0-litre Coyote V8. A manual transmission has also been suggested for V8-equipped versions, potentially differentiating the Mach 4 from conventional sport sedans.[2]
Ford reportedly told dealers that the vehicle would accelerate from 0 to 60 mph (97 km/h) in less than four seconds. The manufacturer has not published official engine outputs, fuel economy figures, dimensions or top speed figures.[2]
Market positioning
The proposed Mach 4 would mark a major expansion of the Mustang nameplate. Since its introduction in 1964, the production Mustang has been offered primarily as a two-door coupe, fastback or convertible. The Ford Mustang Mach-E, introduced for the 2021 model year, expanded the Mustang name to a four-door electric crossover, but the Mach 4 would be the first conventional four-door passenger car carrying the Mustang name.[2]
The vehicle would enter a market that includes performance-oriented four-door cars such as the Dodge Charger and potentially a future four-door Chevrolet Camaro. General Motors has reportedly considered a rear-wheel-drive, internal-combustion-powered four-door Camaro as part of a broader revival of the nameplate.[2]

As of August 2026, Ford had not announced a production date or formally confirmed the Mach 4. Reports following the dealer presentation indicated that production could begin between 2028 and 2029, with the 2029 model year being considered for its market introduction.
