Forensic News

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Forensic News is an independent news organization focused on matters of national security, financial crime, and espionage, founded by Scott Stedman, who is also its lead investigative journalist.[1] After the publication of his book, "Real News: An Investigative Reporter Uncovers the Foundations of the Trump-Russia Conspiracy" in 2019,[2] Stedman founded Forensic News.

Notable stories

The outlet has published a number of critically acclaimed stories. It has been credited with first reporting sexual harassment allegations against The Lincoln Project co-founder John Weaver,[3] the identity of an unnamed Russian national in a high-profile campaign finance indictment,[4] and secret banking documents regarding Leonid Radvinsky, the owner of OnlyFans,[5] among other stories. Its reporting on NSO Group was cited in an Amicus Curiae brief filed by Google in WhatsApp's lawsuit against the Israeli tech company.[6]

Walter Soriano v Forensic News and others

After writing a series of articles in 2019 and 2020 about Walter Soriano, Forensic News and its contributors were sued by Soriano under multiple causes of action including libel and a breach of GDPR. In a hearing on matters of jurisdiction, the English High Court ruled that Soriano's claims in malicious falsehood, harassment, and GDPR, but allowed the libel and part of the privacy claims to proceed.[7][8] In late 2021 in what has been labeled a "landmark ruling",[9] the England and Wales Court of Appeals rejected Forensic News's jurisdictional appeal on the ruling of libel, and accepted Soriano's counter-appeal on GDPR.[10][11]

After the ruling, 15 press freedom organizations condemned Soriano's lawsuit against Forensic News and deemed it a Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation (SLAPP).[12][13]
