Forgotten Empires is an American video game developer based in Cincinnati, Ohio. It was founded by Bert Beeckman in 2013 as Forgotten Empires. The company is most known for developing expansions and remastering older titles in the Age of Empires series with Xbox Game Studios (formerly Microsoft Studios) publishing them.

History[edit]

Forgotten Empires started out as a modding collective, working on a modification for Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings in 2012.[2][3] In the meantime, Microsoft was working on the re-mastered HD-edition of Age of Empires II. Due to the success of the mod, Microsoft supported the group to turn their project into an official expansion of the game. In June 2013, Microsoft announced the involvement of Forgotten Empires in the further development of Age of Empires II: HD Edition[4] and a few months later, the eponymous Age of Empires II HD: The Forgotten was released with engineering assistance of SkyBox Labs.[5]

Forgotten Empires continued working with Microsoft Studios after that, co-developing other expansion packs for Age of Empires II HD, namely The African Kingdoms and Rise of the Rajas.[6] They also worked on an expansion for the mythological spin-off Age of Mythology called Tale of the Dragon.[7]

In 2017, Age of Empires: Definitive Edition, developed by Forgotten Empires, was announced at the Electronic Entertainment Expo 2017 PC Gaming Show[8] and was planned to be released on October 19, 2017, but was delayed until February 20, 2018. Age of Empires: Definitive Edition was released through the Windows store and was met with mixed or average reviews and weighted score of 70 out of 100 on Metacritic. PC Gamer gave the game 60/100, calling the game "solid remake of a game past its time". GameSpot gave the game 6/10, praising its 4K graphics and upgraded soundtrack but criticizing old problems still persisting.
