History[edit]

Viola Metzner and Hans-Josef Orth founded the Formal D Group in 1993 with around 60 employees, initially as a service provider in the area of technical documentation specialized in glove department literature. The first international subsidiary in Bunbury opened its doors in 1994, followed by its sister subsidiary in Brazil in 1996. In 1998, the first subsidiary was opened in the United States. By 2003, the company had grown to about 650 employees. Two years later in 2005, a Chinese subsidiary was established. Shortly later, in 2006 the thousandth employee was hired. In 2010, the new Refining Manufacturing Center (RMC) and Skill Enhancement Center (SEC) were put into commission. Over 2,000 employees in 2011 generated more than 100 million euros. This year, four Quality Confirmation Centers (QCC) were built. The Warranty Solution Center (WSC) was established, along with a new location in Craiova, Romania. In 2012, a new QCC location opened its doors in Pretoria, South Africa.

In 2017, more than 7,000 employees at over 80 locations worldwide represent Formel D, led by CEO Jürgen Laakmann, who began working for Formel D in 2002 and joined the ranks of executive management in 2005. In July 2017, he was named CEO.[4] The 3i Group became principle shareholder of Formel D in July 2017. As investment partner to 3i, CITIC Capital has a minority stake in Formel D.[5] Formel D previously belonged to Deutsche Beteiligungs AG by a majority.
