Formula One on ABC was a American television programme dedicated to the coverage of Formula One motor racing and was broadcast by the American broadcaster ABC with ABC's Wide World of Sports and ABC Sports between 1962 to 1990 and then again in 2002.

Television history[edit]

1962-1990[edit]

In 1961, ABC's Wide World of Sports was created by Edgar Scherick, He sold his Sports Programs, Inc. he owned to ABC and hired Roone Arledge to all programmes with sports. All races initially were tape delayed. ABC's first broadcast of an F1 race was the 1962 Monaco Grand Prix and they broadcast two races in 1963, from Monaco and Italy. ABC again broadcast two races in 1964, The French and Italian Grands Prix. It again broadcast two races in 1965, from Monaco and Germany. ABC had one race broadcast for the next three years, The 1966 United States Grand Prix, 1967 Monaco Grand Prix and 1968 Mexican Grand Prix. No races were broadcast by ABC in 1969 but coveragr resumed for the 1970 Monaco Grand Prix and they broadcast the first two races of 1971, the South African and Monaco Grands Prix. No races were broadcast by ABC in 1972 but returned for three races, in Monaco, Holland and Germany. ABC had two races broadcast in 1974, the Monaco and United States Grands Prix. ABC had one race broadcast in Monaco Grand Prix for 1975, 1976 and 1977. ABC shared their rights to F1 from 1978 onwards. They had two races broadcast in 1978, from Monaco and Italy. ABC had one race broadcast the Monaco Grand Prix for 1979, 1980 and 1981. ABC had two races broadcast in 1982, the Monaco and Detroit Grands Prix. ABC had one race broadcast in Monaco Grand Prix from 1983 to 1990. After that ABC stopped broadcasting F1 races and handed over F1 broadcasting to ESPN.

2001-2002[edit]

In 2001 ABC Sports signed a deal to broadcast Formula One coverage of the 2001 United States Grand Prix. It used the television coverage from F1 Digital+ with Bob Jenkins and Eddie Cheever as commentators. For 2002, A deal was signed to broadcast four Formula One races. The Monaco, Canadian, Italian, and United States Grands Prix. It used both the television coverage from F1 Digital+ (UK) and their commentary team of Ben Edwards and John Watson.
