Fortune Aviation was an air taxi company based in Italy that, in the early 1990s, wanted to try its hand at charter flights, both cargo and passengers.
History
Fortune Aviation SpA was founded on June 14, 1979, to provide air taxi and private flights with twin-engine business aircraft. Its headquarters were in Rome, with its operational base, at Ciampino Airport in the Italian capital city. Its founder and general manager was pilot Giulio La Starza, formerly with Unifly. Over the following years, the company grew to a fleet of eight business aircraft: a Learjet 35A, four Cessna Citations, a SA.341 Gazelle helicopter, and an Agusta A.109C.[1]
In 1992, it decided to expand its operations to include cargo transportation. For this reason, it purchased two DC 9s, formerly owned by Unifly, to be used starting that summer on domestic and European routes. They had a total capacity of 10,000 kilograms (23,000 pounds) of palletized cargo. In that same year, a Boeing 737, dedicated solely to on-demand transport and with accommodation for 135 passengers, was added to the fleet. A Fokker F28 was leased for short-haul operations in 1993.[2] Charter flights were primarily operated on behalf of a French tour operator, but despite the increase in activity, financial problems forced a radical transformation. At the end of 1993, all large aircraft operations were transferred to Noman, a subsidiary established to independently manage the DC 9s for low-cost passenger flights[3].
