Italair is a defunct airline based in Italy. It flew schedules between 1997 and 2000.
History
Italair was founded in 1996 by a group of entrepreneurs from Rome. Its operational base was located at Naples Capodichino airport. The ATR 42 turboprop was deemed the best aircraft for the task and two were purchased second-hand.[1]
Flights began on August 25, 1997, from Alghero to Pisa. In the following months flights to Bologna, Genoa, and Rome (Fiumicino airport) were added. Subsequently, routes from Naples to Pisa and from Cuneo to Rome were also launched.[2]

In January 1998, an accident (without fatalities) halved the fleet. It was necessary to purchase additional aircraft of that same type, two of which arrived the following summer. The network expanded with new flights from Pisa to Bologna and Brindisi. By the end of 1998, approximately 66,000 passengers had been carried. Traffic flows, however, indicated other directions, and in January 1999, the operational headquarters was moved to Pisa "Galileo Galilei" airport.[3] There, plans were also underway to establish a center for the overhaul and maintenance of the Italian-French ATR family of aircraft.[4] Over the course of the year, other destinations were added, such as Verona and Venice; the Alghero-Nice-Barcelona route became quite prestigious.[5][6]
Despite management's efforts, scheduled operations were never profitable enough and passenger traffic declined. Consequently, part of the fleet was leased to other carriers, but by early 2000, the fate seemed sealed, and the company ceased flying in September.[7]
Fleet
Italair fleet consisted of a maximum of six ATR 42, all of them with foreign registrations as all belonging to lessor companies.
Incidents and accidents
- 20 January 1998 - ATR 42 registered EI-COC crashed while landing at Alghero-Fertilia airport. There were no victims but due to the damage suffered the aircraft was declared lost.
