Fouad Afram Al-Bustani (1904-1994), a Lebanese writer, historian, academic and politician who is considered one of the greatest contemporary intellectuals in Lebanon and one of the most important critics of Arabic literature.[1] [2][3]He contributed to the establishment of the Lebanese University in 1951 and was its first president. He also taught Arabic literature for many years at Saint Joseph University. In 1976, he joined the Lebanese Front, one of the most important parties to the conflict at the beginning of the Lebanese Civil War, and was with Dr. Charles Malek one of his most important theorists. He was one of the most prominent advocates for the establishment of a federal system in Lebanon within the framework of cultural pluralism. He passed away in February 1994 due to a heart attack that causing him to be in a coma for four weeks.

Fouad Ephrem Al-Bustani was born in Deir El-Qamar, Lebanon, in 1904. He was educated at the Saint Joseph Sisters School, located in Deir al-Qamar, and the Marian Brothers Institute also in Deir al-Qamar. He started his life as a teacher, then a journalist, and finally as a university professor. He worked as an editor for Al-Bashir newspaper and Al-Makshouf and Al-Pariah magazines. He contributed to the establishment of the Institute of Oriental Literature at the Jesuit University of Beirut. He also contributed to the establishment of the Lebanese University, where he was appointed as its first presidt.

He founded the "Lebanese University’s Publications" which published a wide range of books. He was elected Secretary General of the National Committee for UNESCO and Secretary General of the Lebanese Committee for the Translation of Classical Masterpieces, and he

became a member of the Literary Association when founded in (1928). He was a member of the Association of “Ahl Al-Qalam” and its first president (1951). He became a member of the Geneva-based International Academy of Political Science and a member of the Association of German Orientalists.

He and his colleague Dr. Asad Rustum, commissioned by the Lebanese Ministry of Education, developed the "Brief History of Lebanon", which became the official school history.

Al-Bustani taught Arabic literature, Islamic history and philosophy at Saint Joseph University, the Higher School of Literature, the Lebanese Academy of Fine Arts, and the Lebanese University. Throughout this time, and until his death, he continued editing “the Encyclopedia of the Encyclopedia”

Al-Bustani had been devoted from (1927 to 1982) on the publication of "Al-Rawa'i '," which are research papers in classical and modern Arabic literature with an anthology of which 57 volumes appeared. Below are some from his woks:
